Let's ignore the word and discuss whether its a bad thing that Remy has clearly joined us because we offer the most money plus some sort of relegation release clause.

The whole deal is a bit troubling, but I think the most worrying aspect is the relegation clause. Imagine Remy plays excellently for us and scores 10 goals by May, but due to poor defending and Jamie 'mercenary' Mackie ditching us for Barcelona we are 50:50 to go down on the final day.

What are Remy's motivations going to be in these circumstances? Score, help QPR stay up, and stay in the Prem on his current (well-rewarded) contract with one of the league's lowest clubs. Or play badly / fake an injury / whatever and get released by QPR (or sold for some kind of Demba Ba-esque figure). He'd be a free agent, and able to command that £10m he thinks he's worth as a signing on fee. And he'd probably end up at a bigger club.

So that's the worry. I don't really care whether we call him a mercenary or not. Some players who move for money still work hard and perform excellently, others don't regardless of their contract or ambition.

Where I do think a distinction is helpful though is when looking at players who had the opportunity to join larger clubs but went to us for the money (Hoilett springs to mind).

Derry etc were offered more money at QPR, but equally its not like he turned down a club like WBA or Fulham as they didn't offer enough. It was us or Palace.

Very different to the Remy / M'Vila / Hoilett situation. Especially as the latter three are really at an age where they should be aiming high, in terms of clubs. Go make lots of money when you turn 30.
