Why do some people think that caring about somebody dying, means you instantly stop caring about any others btw.

For what it's worth, I couldn't stand the apparent 'competition' to see who cared most when the Princess of Wales died. The ridiculous public outpouring of grief at that time, was way out of character to the usual British 'stiff upper lip' and made me very uncomfortable.

For me grief is something that should be more personal, and I don't like the constant minutes silences we seem to get at football matches, the 'shrines' that crop up at roadsides (why would you want to commemorate the very spot where someone died?), and I thought that the applause before the games on Saturday were inappropriate when Muamba was still alive.

However, the reason that Muamba's case has been receiving more attention than these other tragic occurrences, is that an awful lot of people saw it happen live on television, in front of a huge crowd, to a very young, fit man. It resonated with the core users of mass social media., and therefore it became a huge deal. We've had several tragedies occur to our players, and we received the god wishes of all football fans then, why should we be churlish when it happens to someone else.

The terrible coach crash reported on the news, and the terrifying shootings in France are no less sad, and no less lamentable, but they don't feel so closely linked to us. That's a sad fact perhaps, but we tend to react strongest, when we feel a connection.

Fingers crossed for Fabrice, we ALL hope he makes the best possible recovery, the good news today gives us more hope. I doubt he'll play football again, but hopefuly he can be recover and enjoy his wedding, and seeing his little boy grow up. That's the important thing at the end of the day....

Sorry guys, but have I just walked into a competition to see how distasteful people can be?

This was a good thread, with interesting views. Do not see the problem with some feeling a bit sensitive. Nor those that are discussing the possible implications for both Bolton and us. I can even understand to a degree the possibly cynical point of view about them pulling out of the cup to give them a better chance of staying up. Rather unsportingly, I also hope that Bolton struggle and go down instead of us.

But this is a football forum. What the hell have terribly tragic events with schoolchildren got to do with anybody feeling sorry for Muamba? Discuss them by all means on a separate thread if you must, but to assume fellow posters don't care because they are not footballers, is in my opinion, disgraceful. And to suggest that the young man is now "Better", is one of the most ridiculous things I have seen on here, ever.

worse stuff happening all over the world...lets just get on with the football and get the 3 points on Wednesday (and hopefully Bolton are affected by the events and they drop some points too )
