This time it's going to be a very nervy affair for Ipswich as nearly all the pressure is on them; the last time we met them, they were yet to show the serious credentials that were expected of them in this division. If we set our stall out to compete we could make it another day like the end of the 11/12 season. We had to avoid relegation at City that day, but this is how we should go about it anyway to fulfill our league commitment and particularly because we have a 1-4 result to improve on and dare I say it, avenge.
But one reason or another, we'll probably approach it pre-season friendly-esque; allowing excuse room:
5 nil Ipswich I’m afraid and as others have said they’ll be 2 or 3 up within 30 mins
No Cook, Dunne or Mbengue will kill us. No Burrell or Kone will mean we can’t hold the ball up or have an outlet.
Gonna be a painful watch I think
This situation just brings to mind how good our 1975/76 side was. When we were due to play Derby away, who were then reigning champions, we had Frank McKlintock, Dave Webb, John Hollins and I believe Dave Clement (?) all out injured. We were forced to bring in a couple of youngsters to fill big shoes, and we still managed to come away 1-5 winners! Different times, long ago.
Indeed. I believe Clement did play after all, but maybe another first-teamer didn't: can't remember who that would have been though: maybe it was three missing (which was enough anyway!)
I mostly watched PSG last night but occasionally dipped into Ipswich game. Unfortunately, they were aggressive, committed, attack-minded and pacy. They really tore into Saints over last 10 mins - it wasn't dissimilar to the PSG game in terms of attacking ferocity, just lacked the world class finishers to bump the score up.
Given how we invariably can't even get up for meaningful games, it's very difficult to see how a bunch of disinterested second-string pansies will resist the inevitable onslaught.
I predict another QPR "No Show" and Tractor Boys threatening to match or even exceed the 7 goals we shipped at Cov.
It wouldn't be an out-of-place epitaph to a damp squib of a season if we were to be humiliated (again) in a high profile game.
Let's hope Ipswich have burnt themselves out a bit after last night.
Had a look on their forum, it's comical..... They realise that we are the best possible opposition to be playing, there's not another team in the whole division they'd rather face. They recognise we have injuries to our best players, are "on the beach" and out of form. BUT: They are still shatting themselves.. last 3 games there with us are 0-0, 0-2 and 0-0 and they keep going on about losing to Maidstone in the FA Cup. They are basically tying themselves up in knots over irrelevant nonsense.
So, with that level of nervousness and pressure it's conceivable we could spring a surprise IF we can keep it tight and cagey for 5 minutes and take it from there. However, I suspect they'll be two up by then.....
