I can completely understand the reactions and the panic amongst the supporters of our club at the moment. The manager without a doubt has to be held accountable for what is going wrong on the pitch at the moment. However in my opinion Mark Hughes simply cannot be removed from his position as manager of this club despite what appears to be a very difficult season ahead and one which may end in relegation.
Since arriving at the club an awful lot of work behind the scenes has been going on to take this club forward. From the bottom up the whole club has been restructured. Mark Hughes appointment is about more than just what happens on the pitch in my opinion the impression that I get is he actively involved in some of the decision making for the business itself. We hear a lot of positive things coming out of the club behind-the-scenes since Fernandes has come in and appointed Hughes but we are just not getting it right on the pitch at present but that can change. In the short term it is clearly not working but the appointment of Mark Hughes in the long term in my opinion would be good for the club. I want stability more than anything else and the only person to get the best out of the current group of players is the current manager because they are all virtually his signings. Appointing another manager at this stage poses too much risk to the future of the club. Where ever he has gone Mark Hughes has been a slow starter. However the man has Premiership pedigree, his previous jobs underline that fact. Should he lose his job at our club he will come back stronger than ever in the future I have no doubt about that you only have to look at the likes of Alan Pardew before he become Newcastle manager and where he is now. Mark Hughes has brought too much personnel in to enable another manager to come in and successfully take over the squad without making more major changes. The likes of Harry Redknapp are incapable of operating without a big budget and for a club or our size could end up sinking us into more trouble as they attempt to stamp their authority over the club.
I am as disappointed as the next man about this season and to be honest could barely bring myself to watch the game today. I've been quoted a number of times recently stating my football team are ruining my life at present. However I realise this, these things can take time and there is no point getting on the managers and players backs. The best thing we can do is show the club we as supporters are prepared to dig deep despite everything which is going on around us and hopefully this positivity has an impact on the team.
We are in a relegation battle this season we need to except that. I do believe this manager will get it right on the pitch and we have already seen evidence of this in our last five home games last season that when it really matters he can get the players to perform for him. To analyse where is all gone wrong I think we all agree it lays with the defence. You build from the back it's the golden rule and he has failed to do this. We need to go back to basics and if it means parking the bus then that's what we need to do.
So despite not agreeing with tactics, team selections and formations I am in the camp "he got us in this mess, let him get us out"...I suspect not many are with me at present but be careful what you wish for, this could all be turned around in a matter of matches...it just might click but we if we behave in a reactive manner to situations all the time the downward spiral may only really begin once Hughes in gone. The past ten months hard work may be about to lead to ten years of stability or if he goes ten years of decline. The Board still seem to think they have the right man and when he first took the job so did the majority of us.
