Tennis players, cyclists, golfers and motor racing drivers are all similar in that they are on the whole sports born out of hobbies where those that participate are generally loners in nature resulting in the participants being selfish, characterless and boring but when they achieve success they crave adulation and expect the whole nation to get behind them circa 1966 or Gazza and the boys returning from Italy.

You could be forgiven for being mistaken that they are equipped with self-deprecating wit, articulate, thoughtful, never troop in moodily past fans with their headphones on listening exclusively to Usher and thinking about their next meal at Nandos and getting their agent to phone the club to sort out such major issues as getting their light-bulbs changed or parking fines paid. They aren't in it for the money at all and all for the love of the sport and loyalty their club and it's fans. Rooney, Modric, Van Persie and so on. Lets face it, we only got Hoillet for the money and his dad asking for money for himself. The guy is 65k a week, is 22 and in terms of the sport achieved nothing. people like Macca were the exception and from a different age and that;s why he always was my favurite player.

For the most part athletes like Wiggins have made huge sacrifices, struggle financially and to maintain relationships due to their schedule and, in his case, dealt with hitting the bottle when, despite coming back with three medals including a gold from Athens, he couldn't even pay the bills because of the lack of sponsorship.

Meanwhile there are 20 year olds who can't tap a ball or get in the first team on million pound contracts who live in mansions blowing it away on diamond earrings, hookers and Cristal in Boujis. Wiggins has got a dry wit, makes good copy if you've read any of his self-penned columns, knows his sport, but has interests outside of it, but most importantly, different from almost actually any British Premiership footballer, he actually doesn't strut around giving it the big I am, but he is a world champion.
