Just to say: I personally think he was just mugging them off abit, and calling them joeys was along the same lines as calling them two bob, or not good enough to lace his boots.
It was in no way a racist term!! These sports personalitys take risks sometimes, but he would have to be mad to be openly racist so it clearly wasnt.Cant believe it, ive been PWOPER MUGGED ORF...Comment

He was mugging them off, calling them Joey's , I have used that term for inexperienced people in my field.Comment

Vine went up in my estimation for telling a bigger tw@t to go do one. I wouldn't want Vine in the first team thoughComment

Paratroopers in training are also called JoeysDyslexic so please don't feel the need to correct my spelling mistakes as I really don't give a **** and before you say use spell checker if it is spelt right / wright but not in context spell check is useless

I'm 42 and remember the Blue Peter version very well but I was quite young then so I'm not sure Rowan, who would probably just be born by then, would be making a direct reference to it unless it has become part of our colloquial language.
We may all be suffering from cognitive dissonance here just because many of us are old enough to remember it's original insulting nature (including "eerrr...you've got fleas!!), and he appears to have fallen out of favour with our fans. However over here in Oz the term Joey Squad is often used to refer to the youth set up. A couple of recent articles highlighting this for you friends of clinking linkies!
AIS duo Jesse Makarounas and Yianni Perkatis have been selected in the Joeys squad to play in an international tournament
So, in what context did Rowan mean it? There's only one person in truth that knows the answer to that question. All I'm suggesting is that it may be just as pertinent to consider a term currently used in football to refer to a youth squad, albeit not in the UK (but perhaps he was aware of its usage?) as opposed to an insult that, IMO was probably before his time, but of course does not suit our purpose when vilifying him!

So Pete, in relation to your last post about youngsters being offended by being referred to as a Joey Squad, what's your take on this? You could say "well that's there and this is here" but I would doubt many youngsters there would even know who Joey Deacon is. Rieger is only two years younger than Vine according to his post and he had to Google him to find out who he was (Deacon...not Vine!!). At least the 'youth' version is current. How do we know Vine isn't aware of it?Comment

I'd also like to point out that if I was referred to as a member of a joey squad...I wouldn't give a sh*t. It's a fact that I am part of the youth squad. Also well done for spelling my name correctly padstow. First time on this messageboard. Prize is in the mail!Comment

comming
comming back to the origional question about vine, when he first came to qpr i couldnt beleive the magnificence of this player,he looked like bowles when he run at defenders
i thought this guy is brillant a left winger who can score 12 goals a season hes everthing we wanted
but hes done a richard langley, the probs started when vine declared he would refuse to take the left wing spot, saying he wanted the cetral strikers role, the problem is his bottle was never much good in the first place, and since the broken legg hes got more frightened
so i agree with the SACK HIM VOTE ,but i say ROWAN YOU REALLY COULD BE SUCH A CLASS LEFT WINGER BUT YOU WILL NEVER MAKE IT AS A STRIKER##
BUT I WISH YOU WELL ROWAN AND NOTHING WOULD GIVE ME GREATER PLEASURE TO SEE YOU DANCING DOWN THAT LEFT WING AGAIN,BUT IF YOU WANT TO PLAY STRIKER THEN PLAY IN THE VAUXHALL LEAGUE BECAUSEComment
