  • Treading Water

Does anyone else feel the same way as me , I think we are in a false position in the league , way above where we should be. We haven’t sorted the goal keeper , full backs and forward positions. Think we are just getting by and are delusional to think of promotion. Sorry to be so negative, it’s just after many years of supporting my team.

If it wasn't for Mbengue on Sat we'd be joint 6th in the league. We've just bought a £4.5m defender and maybe close to selling a £7m midfielder.

We're a small club, and very close to being competitive in this league and we're doing all we can to bring in young players to sell for a profit.

With the big hitters in this league, just treading water and being a mid table championship club is a huge achievement. Just look at the size of some of the teams in L1.

How are we in a false position? We are there because we have earned the points - when we have a fully fit squad we have been a match for pretty much a for anyone in the division bar Coventry and maybe Ipswich.

it’s a very even division this year and even a team like Norwich who looked dead and buried a month or so ago look decent now.

we have made progress this year despite what some might think - as a club we are not ready for the prem - top 10 finish would represent forward progression as opposed to treading water. Play offs ? We have as much chance as any of the 10 teams either side of us.

Fine margins - a bad four minutes aside we would be outside the play offs on goal difference.

I would add that Im no fan of the premiership, in fact, I hate the bloody competition and the impact it has on fans from a cost and scheduling perspective.

Treading water, meaning being self financing and a top ten championship club, hits all my aspirations. We'll win more games than we lose, flirt with promotion, and csn watch it for £35-40.

          There's nothing wrong with stability.

I said after the summer transfer window we'd finish between 12th and 7th. I don't think we're consistent enough to break into the play offs.
This would represent an improvement year on year. Not massive but an improvement. We're selling some players and buying players for quite a bit (for us) of money.
It's steady progress, but maybe it's better than boom and bust.

We are definitely playing better this season which our position shows. Would rather be treating water than drowning as we have been for a few years. On our day we are a good match for anyone bar one or two. I do believe we have a decent side but badly badly badly need a leader on the pitch to get us going in our dark moments sometimes we just turn up and that’s it

I don't really recall a game we won that I didn't think we should.
I'm not saying that a game or many games like this exist, but the fact I can't remember any is my barometer of if we are where I think we should be.
If anything I can recall two games, including Wrexham, where we should have won and didn't.

For me we are mid table. On a good day we look top 6, on a bad day bottom 6. No result home or away would surprise me.

As others have said we are short in some positions. However overall we have recruited well over the last year or two and look a lot stronger than we have for some years.

I don't mind good days and bad days. Until last season we have been generally awful, save for the odd random and usually short lived purple patch, and mid table with some optimism for the future I can live with.

My opinion is we are still crap but better than the last few years.
Bar about 6 teams this division is very poor .
We are ok at home but terrible away , not sure if this is down to the standard of players or the manager being a bit negative.
Still think our recruitment and scouting network is'nt very good and agree we need a keeper , fullbacks, and box to box midfielder.
Our fitness levels are atrocious and have been all season.
This season is over in my opinion, not going up or down and out of both cups.

I think it’s all so close anything could happen in top half. Now the injuries look like reducing and the pitch is looking a lot better I think it’s quite possible we get into top 6. I’m quite happy with winning more than we lose and if we do that in this league we’ll be close.

OP is being generous saying we're treading water. I'd say we've been chucked overboard mid-ocean and the ship's sailing into the distance...

10+ years in this effing division and not one sniff of the play-offs. The absolute best was 8th I think but that was hugely and artificially boosted by us winning 4 out of last 5 games against disinterested teams with nothing to play for. We literally embarked on that run as soon it became impossible to make top 6.

Majority of other season's finishes are well into bottom half, with at least 3 recent ones involving genuine relegation threat.

Now seeking to mitigate or excuse this by claiming we are a piddly club who should celebrate finishing 15th is absolutely unacceptable. Over the past 10 seasons the following clubs have made the top 7:

                        Blackburn
                        Ipswich
                        Hull
                        Luton
                        Millwall
                        Watford
                        Brentford
                        Swansea
                        Barnsley
                        Reading
                        Cardiff
                        Derby
                        PNE

I don't consider any of them significantly "bigger" or richer than us (in the relevant season). I've left out teams like WBA, Sheffield United, Burnley etc

In the past 5 seasons the following have made it to FA Cup quarter finals:

                        Preston
                        Coventry
                        Sheff U
                        Blackburn
                        Grimsby
                        Burnley

Again, are they massively bigger and us? Dunno the stats but I'm guessing we might have made 5th round twice in 40yrs?

We are doing poorly and I feel another bottom half finish is incoming in May.

Our average attendance last season made us the 4th smallest club in the division. Even those with 10% bigger attendances would mean they have a playing budget of £1m more thsn us......two £10k a week players. That difference might seem insignificant but I think its huge.

This statistic shows the attendance of the Championship of the 25/26 season. Clubs are listed by overall attendance descending.

CN has been very clear that the policy now is to increase the player budget from selling players on. The reason we're not 4th from bottom is because we had a £9m cash injection from Eze's summer move. Without future player churn im sure we'll be back to scrapping around the relegation areas again.

We may have a bigger budget than our attendances would suggest, but it still means having young and inexperienced players on the pitch, with the occasional fook up like last Sat. Inside the top 10 is my benchmark for this season.

We need to shift Varane for £5-7m to maintain the budget for next season.....and perhaps another player too. The next set of accounts will be out in Feb, and it will be interesting to see if we're still losing £12m a season. Once thing is for sure, we've spent that £9m Eze windfall on Edwards, Burrell, Kone, Dembelle and Mbengue. The churn needs to happen again very soon.

The article below suggests that from a player budget perspective, we are ranking 17th in the championship this season. Finishing in the top 10 would mean we're punching above our weight.

Think we've been quite unlucky this season losing chair , burrell , JCS who for me walk into the team.
I don't like the PL with teams celebrating avoiding relegation like they've won something....
Ok we will get the odd day like beating Chelsea home and away and the night Jamie Mackie got the winner against the scousers when we were dead and buried at HT.
Mostly I remember walking out of the ground being beaten again.
Where we are now being 3/4 points off 6th place will do me as championship football is exciting...
What a great game it was on Saturday....
When I signed up for QPR in the 70s we were the best club in London playing free flowing exciting football.
Doubt those days will ever come back as football is all about money now...
It's strange how the most exciting season I think we had was promotion from league one...
There's loads of ups and downs supporting Rangers but I wouldn't have it any other way.
