The Parachute Money Clubs Next Season

What with the same clubs yo-yo'ing up and down (and down and down in Luton's case!) next season has a very low number of parachute clubs in our division. Does level the field somewhat and opens up fairer competition that brings 5th and 6th spot into play...

With parachute money potentially payable for 3 seasons there's the possibility of nine teams getting it so next season is pretty much as low it gets.

As it stands right now there will only be 4 clubs getting parachute money next season:

    Southampton
    Leicester
    Ipswich
    Sheffield United

Could be only 3 clubs if Blades successfully negotiate the play-offs (so pragmatically speaking we ought to be rooting for Wilder irrespective of fact he's a twerp).

This current season was Watford and Norwich's final season of getting money - presume there will be some cost-cutting and pruning going on with them this summer as they prepare to join the poor house.

Luton will be getting parachute money in the third tier, what a farce. Next season is their last instalment though so even if they come straight back up they will be significantly poorer in 26/27 Championship season.

As Blackburn and Millwall have shown, you don't have to tear up trees to stay vaguely in the mix, just chug along reasonably well and don't go on one or two lengthy winless runs!

Wrexham's turnover for 23/24 (L2) was nearly £1m more than ours even with an inferior TV deal and a tiny stadium. They have the Netflix money a greater merchandising from all over the world as a result.

£1 million isn't a lot in this division but the global attention thing is a good point. I'm not very good with the FFP rules so I will defer to you on this.

Granted £1m isn't a lot more, but there was two divisions between us at that point and their stadium holds 12,600 which is going up to 18,000 for 26/27. It's the global shirt sales, Netflix and wider sponsorship that will legitimately boost their spending power.

I would guess their championship budget including this division's TV money would put them in the top 10 clubs in the league. I would be amazed if they're in a relegation dogfight. There were rumours about them signing Vardy.

Wrexham and Birmingham will be subject to broadly same FFP rules as us. Cos it's assessed over 3 rolling years there'll be certain tweaks for them.
Don't forget that there are many clubs with seriously rich owners/backers though. FFP does kinda level it out and it's getting harder to find snide ways around it.
Thing with Wrexham is they will not want to tarnish their plucky underdog media darling reputation by getting called out for financial chicanery. The rules in L1 and L2 are a bit different and this far they're clean.
I suspect clubs ostensibly owned by media conglomerates will soon be regarded with as much disgust as the gulf state backed teams and the governing bodies will adapt FFP to ensure Disney+ FC doesn't receive ludicrous sponsorship out of kilter with a small tier 2 club.

                good Stuff Abs

Tbh ive been a few times to Pboro this season and they have been what you would call poor this season normally up the top fighting for promotion but did win the EFL cup against Brum

Brum tbh were diabolical in the final and watched wrexham and hoofball won't cut this league better team has been Stockport under Dave challinor and Clint hill hard physical play some decent stuff but I think a lot are loan players

As for those coming down we should really fear any Leicester losing Vary back 4 are slow plodders Soton will lose best players and Ipswich will probably be in top 6 if they keep Mckenna

Can see it being a weaker league all depends on who we bring in as manager recruitment has to be a lot better given how many are off

I can't see there being much to fear only how inept we can be at times

Of course Wrexham will be subject to FFP, however you're completely missing the important point. As Sheep correctly pointed out, their revenue is already higher than ours and that was based on 12 months ago. It will be even higher than the £27m now. I'd guess their revenue is now north of £35m and coming into the Championship with the extra TV revenue and bigger sponsorship deals for them is going to put them around £50m. In basic terms, they're not far off like a PL team coming down. Their revenue is staggering and blows all Championship teams out the water apart from those receiving parachute payments.

Revenue is what wins the day, not rich owners. You can only spend what you bring in, which is the huge advantage Wrexham have. If they're bringing in £50m+ per year in the Championship, over the 3 year period that gives them £150m plus the £41m allowed losses. Whereas we're sitting at £78m plus £41m losses. As you can see, they're virtually doubling what we're bringing in. It may get even higher as well, as their new stand will be built for the 26/27 season, which means even more revenue generated.

They've spent wisely and their wages only account for around 40% of their revenue. The lowest percentage in the whole of the EFL. They've done a proper job and have been very, very clever. Wrexham are a serious player, maybe not next season as the quick progression will have an impact on their squad, which is large and needs time to even itself out with the quality needed, but the whispers are they're going for it again. Don't underestimate momentum. If not next season, I fully expect them to be challenging the top 6 in 26/27 ahead of a full on title charge the following year. Obviously money doesn't guarantee success, but I'd be very surprised if they don't hit the PL in the next 5 years.

All the above applies to Birmingham as well. They're now on a similar journey under Wagner.

If they've only been spending 40% of their revenue on player wages it could be possible that they have "savings" to add to their championship budget too!! Im sure infrastructure improvements would have been financed by long term loans.

I agree, their legitimate spending power will be huge and theyre probably not using this to service legacy debts like other championship clubs have to.

They're certainly worth a punt to win the play offs.

I wouldn't be surprised on anywhere wrexham might finish next season, from champions through to relegation fight.

Their manager isn't great, the highlights I saw seemed to indicate some dodgy calls went their way, and they scraped through a lot of games in L1 (10 of their 26 victories came via 1-0 wins), and if you compare to other teams that have made quick jumps such as Ipswich, Southampton or Luton their stats aren't anywhere near as good.

Maybe their name will do them well, but I don't think they are at the same base point as either of those teams.

They have to get their recruitment right, their manager needs to step up big time, the quality difference is huge, and it would be a miracle for them to make it.

Going to be fun to watch as I also believe this is the easiest the league is going to be for us to make a push too.

They got 92 points mate, you can't bring up dodgy calls! They were awarded 4 penalties all season, Birmingham had 13! As for 1-0 wins, wasn't there a famous Arsenal side that won a league title doing just that? I think that's a bonus for them, they're obviously very hard to beat, which will stand them well next season. If they won 4-3 every week, I'd have concerns for them.

You could be right about Parkinson, but the job he's done at Wrexham is unbelievable. Yes, he's had a great budget etc, but he's done very well to keep harmony within the squad and looks to have created a very strong dressing room in terms of attitude, which is very difficult when bringing in lots of players each season on bigger money than the rest.

They won't go down. Mid table.

I see The Prem have charged Leicester with FFP breaches. I'm a bit fuzzy on what/when but it appears to be a throwback to their EFL overspend last year when they wriggled out of any sanction by claiming they were not an EFL club as of June last year (or some other sleight of hand with dates).

Maybe this will result in a points deduction next season or maybe they'll pull the same stunt and say they're not a prem club anymore?

I get the feeling it's a half-assed attempt by The Prem to give the impression they actually give a toss about the EFL's rules when in reality they don't.

Still, might put a slight spanner in the works of Foxes plans of pee'ing the league with 100+ points next term.

Latest figures from Wrexham show they had turnover of £26.7m to June 2024 when they were in L2.

To May 2024 our turnover came in less than theirs at £25.9m even though we played two leagues above them with a much superior Sky deal.

I agree their financial power will be almost double ours next season, unless some more Eze money ever materialises.

They have to be careful. They are in a weird position of being utterly reliant on Disney+ re-commissioning "Welcome to Wrexham" every year. What is it now, S4? My wife got bored with it midway through S2, My daughter binned it during S3... viewers are fickle and broadcasters are ruthless.

My view is the series has some legs whilst each campaign ends with a final or a play-off or best of all a promotion. I think Producers have milked to death any local sob stories and they no longer employ lowly paid local lads as players and show stalwarts like Paul Mullin arent playing at the higher level either, they are losing the "human interest" angle and will be straying into bratty overpaid footballer territory soon so I suspect they have two more series maximum before the show is dropped. Obviously the only way to get round this would be for them to go up to Prem this season or next and render the Disney show redundant in terms of income.
