Up to a point. With normal workers on normal wages it is absolutely right they should be looked after, esp if they sustain their injuries while on the job. But I find myself wondering about this in a footballer's case (and I speak as one who has always really liked Faurlin). These players get bewildering amounts of money. Part of the justification for this was that their careers are very short and might end early due to injury. If it was the tea lady who falls under the tea urn she naturally deserves looking after, but if a player's contract runs out and we don't know if they will be anything like the same player again - or even get back into the first team - would you seriously give them, say, a two-year contract on 20/30,000 a week? I'm really sorry if this sounds mean, but I'm not sure I would. Instead I would ask him to prove his fitness or if we do give him a new contract give ourselves the option to cancel the contract if he is no longer able to perform at the level we require. We are a business and potentially spending a lot of money on a player who might not be able to play means there is less money to spend on someone who might make a difference. Of course I would love nothing better than Ali to make a full recovery and play for us for many years to come - just think sometimes fans are a little too keen to spend the chairman's money...Comment

I'm only too happy for us to give Ale a year's contract to get him through the treatment that the club should be providing, and give him a chance to prove he's still able to get back into the team.
Nobody was suggesting a long (multiple year) contract were they?
We're all only too willing to see the chairman's multi-millions spent on players, facilities, wages etc, why baulk at supporting one of our long-serving players who's had some appalling luck?
It's an odd place to start getting nervy about the how the club spends it's cash IMOComment

You are only too happy because you aren't paying! How generous! A year's contract at 30k a week would be £1.5m potentially for the privilege of having someone using our treatment table. I've constantly warned about wasted money because it means when players who really would make a difference to us become available, we don't sometimes have the money. Ale might be that rare beast - the loyal footballer - but most players show very little loyalty to their clubs so am not quite sure why clubs should show loyalty to players. Cuts both ways.Comment

Faurlin isn't some fly by night mercenary though as you say, he's one of the players who were down here with us last time, and he went through what must have been a particular nightmare as his transfer might have been the end of our promotion hopes (through absolutely no fault of his own). For us to finally make a stand against the rising tide of mercenaries by letting his contract run down and waving goodbye, seems a bit off at best.
He deserves a years extension, to get himself fit again, and to get a chance to play for us again IMO.Comment

Not really sure our club can jump on the morale high ground about saving money. Faurlin deserves a 1 year extension. Yet people like Hogan get extensions why? Luke young?Comment

Fully agree with you that if anyone deserves looking after he does. Just be interested to know how many urging the club to do this would, for instance, continue to pay a gardener/ cleaner/ odd job man/ whatever even if they couldn't work for you for a year due to an injury. If you all would, then I applaud you for being such good citizens.Comment

I think it would depend very much on the individual and the way they have performed/conducted themselves during their employment. Very refreshing to know that the owners of our club know how to do the right thing and in this particular instance, appear to be doing it. To be fair though, by the time his current contract has expired, the club will have a far better idea as to his future prospects of playing regularly and no doubt any contract extension would reflect this.Comment
