The lesson with Ronnie Edwards is a simple one: When you're looking for players make sure you look far and wide but don't forget to keep an eye out closer to home. Although we couldn't have paid the £3m that the Saints did in '24, Edwards was looking a tidy bet at least a couple of years prior.

He's got another three years on his Southampton contract, so with a transfer fee and wages I doubt there's any mileage in that deal. I'm sure he'll be needed on the south coast.

With his reoccurring foot injury, age and current wages it would be hard for him to accept at least a 50% drop in salary. We'd have to bring him down to the £10-15k bracket. He'd get more elsewhere. We need younger players that we might be able to sell in the future. We need some of Cook's £30k a week to offer Dunne a better package.

Cooks been superb for us but I totally agree, dunne must be the priority now
