  • Match Thread | QPR 1 PNE 4

QPR boss Steve McClaren has been looking to make his side sharper in front of goal ahead of Preston North End’s visit this weekend.

The R’s chief was disappointed with his sides final third showing in their 1-0 defeat at Sheffield United last time out.

And the Hoops manager has used the last week to work on QPR’s attacking threat ahead of hosting the North End on Saturday.

“We have worked hard this week as normal and we looked at the reasons why we lost (against Sheffield United) and we’ve been trying to put that right this week,” McClaren told www.qpr.co.uk.

“We did everything right except when it came to scoring. We were poor in the final third and normally we are quite dynamic in that respect.

“We were very organised and disciplined but in the final third disappointing. We’ve worked on that this week in terms of going forward and creating opportunities and we have to react now.

“Those who didn’t play at Sheffield United we gave a game to on Tuesday against Crystal Palace.

“I wanted to give them 90 minutes and there was a great performance and attitude that saw us win 5-0.

“That was pleasing and the squad is in good condition and ready for this game.”

QPR met Saturday’s opponents Preston on the opening day of the season back in August when Alan Browne’s second-half header was all that separated the two teams.

It was the first of a dismal set of results in the opening weeks of the 2018/19 campaign for Rangers, who have since dramatically turned around their fortunes.

In a similar fashion, Preston have also had to battle hard to turn around an early-season slump to now climb seven points clear of the relegation zone and McClaren isn't expecting an easy game despite the form guide.

“I don’t think revenge is the right word,” continued Steve. “It’s just another game, it’s a home game and we want to win it. We want to start another run after the last one came to an end. It’s about performing and getting a result.

“There’s no expectation in any game. We say each week you have to prove yourself again regardless of win, lose or draw in the previous game.

“They are too good a team to be talking about relegation. They will be talking about pushing on after getting some injuries back and a few new signings. This is going to be a difficult game for us.”

QPR have no fresh injury concerns with injured trip Tomer Hemed (groin), Angel Rangel (thigh) and Geoff Cameron (ankle) on course for a February return to action. Midfielder Massimo Luongo is still unavailable due to international duty.

            Opta stats

QPR have lost their last five Championship matches against Preston, a run stretching back to August 2016.

Preston are looking to win three consecutive league matches against QPR at Loftus Road for the first time in their history.

Steve McClaren has won his two home league meetings against Alex Neil - a 6-2 win for Newcastle against Norwich in October 2015 and 1-0 win for Derby against Norwich in November 2016.

Preston are the only Championship side yet to concede in the opening 15 minutes of a match this season.

Since his Championship debut for QPR in February 2017, only Pablo Hernandez (201) has created more chances in the division than Luke Freeman (186).

Excluding own-goals, substitutes have scored eight Championship goals for Preston this season - more than any other team; by contrast, QPR have seen just one goal via a substitute, a joint-low along with Millwall.

David Prutton predicts: 1-1 (5/1 with Sky Bet)

Love the way he talks. So refreshing compared to what we've heard from our last couple of managers. Lets hope the match day squad respond well and we can get 3 points. I don't care what the score is but a good slick performance and a couple of goals will be fantastic.

This is a massive game, win and we are certain to climb at least one place or more and be right in the play off mix, lose and its back to back defeats and other results won't go our way 2 weeks in a row, a draw is obviously better than a defeat but its a win we need and its long overdue against Preston. Anyone who was at Preston on opening day will know that our time wasting at villa didn't even come close to what hapenned at Preston on 4th August.

Preston were well drilled smart side. They don’t ha e much about them but if they get ahead they deploy the dark arts.

Was at Preston Bal and your right they won from playing the ref let’s hope we have wised up

This fixture reminds me of Adel's goal @ LR in 2009. A goal that was superb in itself and also sparked a short lived spell (under Jim Magilton) of some of the best football I'd seen from the hoops in many a year...

top manager for us, says it how it is and comes across as very professional. love what hes bringing to the club as a whole.

i wonder what our line up will be though? i'd like manning to be given a game alongside cousins as preston are a very physical team and we need someone whos tough in the middle. not a big fan of scowen this season.

It is a game we need to score first in as you do not see many games involving them that are entertaining. Get the first goal and run right over them.
