Nice as it is to scrape a scrappy win and try to enjoy it, listening to 5 minutes of 606 in a taxi with all the plastics and knuckledraggers reminded me of the flip side of an England win 1-0 against Ukraine - the given that England are now confirmed unanimously as the best side in the world - and the last 40 or 50 years have been a blip.
One caller: 'The only team that could beat us is Russia and they are out, Holland are out, Spain are past it, Germany aint got nuffin'". Prat.

Going into this tournament, no-one was confident of getting through the group, let alone winning it.
Now we've done that, people are still not happy about the way we did it. Good grief.
It reminds me of watching QPR over the years, the crowd moan like fury when we just lump it forward, yet the second we pass the ball sideways more than once you start to hear the rumbles of "get it forward, stop p***ing about with it ffs"
Summary : a few football fans are fearfully fickle fools. Fact (amondo)Agree with you both, if it were QPR and i was asked do i want a successful team or a pretty one, well no need to answer is there.........Originally posted by paulmason View PostWhat did Arsenal, Real Madrid and Swansea win this season ..................... that's right **** all.

And i didn't enjoy that either :=):Originally posted by silvercue View PostFrance were good against us. Chelsea won the champions league playing like that. Football is changing in case you hadn't noticed. PLayers from Spain etc have gone so far ahead of us we have to play a new way - which is basically organsiation and defence.
The groups in the Euros are a lot harder than the World Cup and we made them look under control with our organisation. France haven't lost for 22 games until tonight - they must be awful. The Premier League was utterly poor this year - we still barely survived - not sure what you are talking about, the group was not very, very poor.
Football is about winning not a beauty contest.
We had 1 shot on target in 90 mins against France and for 20 mins against Sweden were run ragged until the Swedish keeper got Walcotts shot all wrong, tonight we were again handed our goal by Ukraines Keeper, then survived a Clint Hill moment, against a side who had no cutting edge at all. We have got lucky so far, which is unusual for England but I stick by France, Sweden and Ukraine have all been poor, 22 games unbeaten or not. If we beat Italy and then Spain then hats off to RH but until then .................

First rule of intelligent management: cut according to your cloth.Originally posted by Kit View PostIf we beat Italy and then Spain then hats off to RH but until then .................
Against France, England were actually organised, had a Plan A and a Plan B - unheard of under recent managers - and against Sweden utilised both. If you accept the technical limitations of this squad, you have to hand it to the management. Most astonishingly of all, England's ball retention against Ukraine showed a marked imrovement - they are starting to look more comfortable on the ball, again a first for recent England sides. And the squad seem happy, never the case under Capello. Gerrard was outstanding against Ukraine and looks like a proper skipper. Just think about the succession of England managers who have failed to get the best out of him.
I actually heard one imbecile on a phone in wondering why we don't play like Spain, ignoring the fact that we don't have those type of players - and that Spain bored the pants off everyone when they won the WC, with lowest tally of tournament goals scored by a winning side. They didn't exactly inspire against Croatia. Plenty of teams have gone very far in the Euros and WCs while not exactly setting the world on fire: Italy in particular have had some terrible starts to competitions and ended up as finalists. Tactically, of course England still have issues but you sense Hodgson is addressing them. I never ever felt that under Capello or Sven.
No wonder managing England is such a thankless task. Loose, and you get crucified. Win by playing to your strengths, and people moan.Last edited by hal9thou; 20-06-2012, 03:13 AM.

Far from the best performance, but all that matters is the result. Dont think anybody expected pretty football under Roy tbh.
Had to eat (yes, again!) my words in the fact I used to say Gerrard was overrated but he was top dog yesterday, great player, shame he can never raise a smile!
Think we'll raise our game for the I-ties. Will be a scrappy game IMO but we'll come out with a 1-0 win.
Refuse to give Terry credit for the clearance (purely because hes a karnt) and so, for me, all credit goes to hart for getting a touch on that shot and stopping it going straight in!You should never underestimate the predictability of stupidity.
