We sorely miss a possession player like Smith. Ferdinand has had a dip in form since the Terry incident I feel.

Definitely the latter. For Sunderland Hughes did everything we thought he should do after Liverpool and we still went back to square one. It's like playing Whack-a-Mole.

In fact, the only conclusion I feel confident in coming to after the last few games is that Onuoha is no good at centre half (alongside Ferdinand at least) and Young is a serious weak spot. Those two things are consistent and actionable.

Everything else in the team you may as well roll a dice because there's just no telling what will work.
