In the Times today there is a report saying we are after the player.

Assuming Defoe is out of the quesiton he wd be a storming signing. Apparently he went shopping instead of attending Villa's last match. Notes he has "only" scored five goals this season. However, it comes with the usual quotes about how he is happy at Villa etc.

Such an underrated player, his goal record is bl00dy impressive; 46 in 88 PL games at Sunderland & Villa.

I started the thread because I'd read in the times that we were after him. Matty then posted something published later - today's metro - rubbishing the reports. i thought some fans might be interested that we were being linked with a player that good...

I cant see Bent coming to W12, as his strengths are playing on the shoulder of the last defender attacking the ball, not with his back to the goal, holding the ball up for others. I would love him to wear the hoops, but I think it would be professional suicide if he did.

Well worth starting a thread on this. Last night both on BBC radio and Talk sport they discussed the fact that we have money to spend and we have registered an interest as Bent's not happy with things in general at Villa. All the best players around him from last season having gone etc etc.

Could be a great loan signing for us as we can now afford his wages

And therein lies the problem. He is a fantastic player but massively overpriced imo. Besides, I'm glad we are looking to spend wisely rather than throwing cash around.

Mellow, big name layers get relegation release clauses these days. With agents not missing a trick and seeing every opportunity to make a penny quality players don't lose out if their club goes down. Demba Ba and Hitzlsperger had them at West Ham and Parker didn't hang about.
