If there is a release clause in a contract for a fixed fee, then that is all the transfer fee is and the selling club is obliged to notify the player and allow them to talk. Blackburn provided a nice embarrassing example of not understanding this little clause earlier in the month with Phil Jones.

I actually thought the OP was going to be saying what a joke it was to have to pay £1.25M for him, ie the fee being too high.

Ian Holloway did once state £2M for him was a joke.

Fact is £1.25M is all any club has to pay Blackpool -- hopefully that's clear to everyone, even the OP who loves to throw a "tool" or "fool" insult about.
What we do need to realise is part of the package below that line is a signing on fee, wages, bonuses etc, etc.
