With Helgusson likely to be off to Watford and Priskin back at Ipswich and Vine unable to hold a ball up for others, Stead can do that job for us. Can't see Simpson, Balanta, German or Dave - if they stay - doing that.

Not impressed if this is the kind of striker he's going for first. Surely a 'top' target ie; Beattie etc would be your first port of call before anyone else comes in for them? Slightly disappointed as someone else mentioned journeyman who doesn't score that many....

I mean this by will be the battering ram to drive the defence crazy and let either Simpson or Hooper score the goals. Goddard and others: many of those who expressed doubts about Stead are not "the usual suspects". I for one have long been saying that fans should be more realistic. But as Gee points out a 1 in 5 strike rate in the last few years is hardly inspiring. If we are looking for a solid mid table finish then sure players like him will do a v solid job but just don't see him figuring as much more than an impact sub in any promotion winning team. Him or Blackstock? Arguably we wd have a worse centre forward than when we were skint. I'm not expecting Drogba, but I wd have hoped we were raising our sights a little higher than this, particularly in the striker dept where as someone rightly pointed out today we are weaker than any other team in the entire league.

Yes there's better around but they want to much money, Kitson & Beattie are Prem players so will still want the same as they are getting at Stoke.
