  • What Was Your First Away Game?

Mine, as a 11 year old, was at Millwall late October 1970, we lost 3-0.

An ex colleague of my mum’s took me that day, and to half a dozen away games that season, she was in her late 60’s and had supported the R’s for all her life.

I have supported Rangers for 55 seasons, since March 1969.

Leicester city at Filbert street 1975 or 76 can't remember , think it was 2-2 draw . Two coaches went from Springbok pub , loads of fighting after game , missed coach and had to bunk train to get home to my aunties house in Batman close where i was staying . My Aunt was in a right state because she had'nt told my Mum and Dad that she let me go to Leicester on my own at 13 years old and that i had'nt returned on the coach. She was so happy when i got back at about 9-30 pm.

There was about 7 of us all older than me that missed the coach and bunked on train . We hid in the bogs when ticket collector came through.

Wow, I am really surprised how many first away games go back to the 60’s

although I became a supporter circa 1955, my first away GAME was 1961 ish at Selhurst Park, I remember the programme stated that Peter Angel was our penalty expert (sic). never been known to miss!
Guess what- ? we got a penalty and lost one nil.

What I also remember from those days was that everyone played 2. 3 5.- nos 8 . 9 and 10 would line up for the kick off- ball had to go forward, Every time our 9 would pass to left 10 who would pass it back to no 6 ( left half in those days) Peter Angel who would without fail launch it forward straight to the other side before our forwards had time to advance. It struck me that Angel lacked in confidence in his ability to try and advance with the ball ( unless he was under instructions to launch)

This is no disrespect to Angel who was a good servant to the club and died tragically young from a heart attack.
i was always surprised when I used to watch so many players emerge after the match smoking cigarettes. Angel always seemed to. Smoking is clearly a factor in heart disease so maybe
that was factor. Angel converted to a left back later in his career and gave further good service.
Nostalgia ain't what it used to be!!

                            portsmouth away 1969 3-1 win.
remember standing behind the goal we were shooting at, then walking around to the other end for the second half.
winkle picking on the beach after the game.
