If the recent polls are anything to go by, 80-90% of fans want to see Ainsworth gone. I bet many fans refreshed Newsnow every fifth minute after the Blackburn match, to see who our new manager would be. However, after a week, there are no signs of Ainsworth leaving and a new manager coming.
I am not surprised. My take on the situation is simple: We will employ a new Director of Football before we employ a new permanent manager. I do not rule out a caretaker manager for some weeks, but a new permanent manager won't be signed during the next few weeks.
The reason is obvious: Any attractive manager will not sign for a club that will get a new DOF in the near future. It is well known that QPR is conducting a search process for a new DOF with the help of an external recruitment company specialising in sports management.
The role of the DOF is to set the direction of the club and define the philosophy and style of play for the entire club (from the first team through to the academy). The prime responsibility of the DOF, after having worked out a strategy and a plan, is to appoint the right manager (and the right head of the academy and the scouting unit). Attractive managers will not sign for a club some weeks or months before a new DOF arrives, risking that the new DOF will decide to go in a very different direction than the manager.
The relationship between the DOF and the manager is more important than any other relationships in a football club. If they do not share the same view on how to play football, the cooperation will never work. A manager with no other options might accept to sign for QPR without knowing who will be DOF, but a serious, attractive manager won't. The owners understand this, and are now putting maximum focus on getting the DOF onboard. They do not spend much time on thinking about a new manager.
Hence, I think we can drop throwing names around for a vacant manager role right now. It is all about waiting for the new DOF. Once he is appointed, and we learn about his past achievements and his thoughts of how to develop a football club, we can revisit the speculations. Then we will understand what manager-profile he is looking for.
I see that some fans are of the belief we do not need a DOF. If owners would be super-competent football people, we might not need a DOF. Good old Jim Gregory knew a thing or two about football, and was chairman and DOF in one and same person. But Amit and Ruben are not in that league, so please put the idea about a club without a DOF to bed right away. It would be a wreck less decision.

The chance a new DOF will face relegation in his first year is high, which will make a financial difficult situation even harder. My hope is that there are many very competent DOF candidates out there that see this as a fantastic challenge! If a DOF can organise a solid comeback for QPR, taking us back to the upper half of the Championships, he will be able to move on to larger clubs and bigger budgets!
