  • Why Are We Conceding Too Many Goals?

Very poor result today. I think it's time for the owners to step in and tell the manager we are going to employ a defensive coach. This should have been done 2 and a half years ago.

Warburton for all the good he has done improving the team has not improved the defence in any way shape or form imho. He has had since June 2019 to address the defence he has not done so.

We kept a few more clean sheets last season. But this season we have reverted to the standard of defending of Warburton's first season. This is simply not good enough.

Yes, we play attractive football but we do not keep enough clean sheets. We have a coach who is to attatoo-minded. H He is not the type of manager who builds from the back.

We were warned about this flaw in Warburton's game plan by fans of clubs he's managed before. Even Clint Hill said Warburton did not coach defending set-pieces in training with Glasgow Rangers. That is a major Red Flag our owners missed or ignored.

It's time they insisted on a solid defensive coach right now. If Warburton does not agree with it move him on.
Let's face the facts we will not finish top 6 this season the amount of goals we are conceding consistently.

I'm not saying we go all defensive, but we must seriously tighten up at the back. It's not improving. Warburton and his coaches need to address this problem asap or I would move Warburton on.

We need a coach who knows how to build from the back.
That coach is not Warburton. What do you guys think?

Totally agree. Football was far from attractive today though

Did not know that re Clint Hill. Amazing if true, then again I've been saying all season we won't go up if we concede 2 a game, and the defence is getting worse if anything.

It's all Warburton. Always has been and there's no historical evidence to suggest he will or can rectify things.

Since returning to English football from Glasgow, Warburton's teams (which is essentially mostly us and a bit of Forest) have conceded an average of 1.60 goals per game. The average in the Championship last season was 1.26.

That might not seem a huge differential but extrapolating the numbers over 46 games 1.26 equates to 58 goals conceded and 1.60 goals equates to 73 goals conceded.

Warburton's goals against record is consistently poor, it's a recurring theme every season. However, fans inexplicably prefer to ignore what's staring them in the face and and trot out nonsense like "well its entertaining" or "we've got our Rangers back".

Looking at past 5 seasons, the top 6 (ie 30 teams) only twice has a club conceded more than 60 goals. No top 6 team concedes over 70 goals, it doesn't happen.

Totally agree. I get that he is about total football and possession, and I think that should be the plan A. But as Clint says in that interview, you need a plan B. Why wouldn't you practice defensive corners? You know you will be up against corners, so why not practice them? It doesn't detract from playing nicely in possession. Just doesn't make any sense to me. For once Joey Barton was 100% right by the sounds of it!

Excellent post Abseits. I 100% agree with you. It's very clear where the problem is. Warburton is the problem.
Most of the Rangers fans need to wake up to these facts.

For the winner today why isn't one player dropping off the centre half, we know we are slow at the back and that dembele is quick . One ball did us . This is basic defending

Same problem been there for the last 3 years conceding far too many goals never been addressed by Warburton. I lay the blame thoroughly at his door it's his job to get it sorted, our big lumps at the back are far too slow no pace in there at all , we're always having to chase games , when not chasing always look like we're struggling to hold on to a lead, I think all round saturday we weren't at it football seemed so slow and lethargic, quite poor all round, and as is usual whenever we take a big following the team perform awful,

So let me get this straight.

We are top half, chasing play offs and playing attractive football and scoring more than almost everyone else, all with a budget that is in the bottom quarter of the division.

Yeah, lets sack the manager FFS.

I don't think too many want him sacked what they want him to do is his job and sort out why we're shipping too many soft goals, after all it is his job. And mostly having to chase games cant keep winning games from behind, we play good football, sometimes far to slow, allowing teams to get their shape back, but only 3 teams have conceded more goals than us, and it great scoring loads but not when we let in so many.

He never said sack the manger. Just that the manager hasn't sorted the problems at the back out. Which he hasn't. No point scoring all these goals if we are conceding just as many.

I am very unhappy with our defensive work, but to think QPR under Warburton is not practising defending in training is utter nonsense. Of course we do. I am quite sure the coaches spend a lot of time trying to fix it. The more appropriate question is if we have a good enough defensive coaches. And good enough defenders. One of the obvious shortcomings is pace - our defenders simply don't have it and the opposition is set up to exploit it. I think we need defensive refinforcements in January if we shall have any hope of reaching the play offs.

Warburton doesn’t do defending well, he never has and never will. A pacy CB might help, but a slight change in tactics might help. I do think he needs a defensive coach amongst his staff as I am not sure Eustace is either.

we won’t be a top 8 side for much longer if we don’t resolve this. Forest on Friday will take advantage of our poor defending and this could see us dropping out of the top 8 by the next evening.
with Cardiff inevitably improving now that McCarthy has gone and a live sky fixture at Blackpool following we won’t be top 10.

p.s. now that I have posted that, perhaps the lads can prove me wrong.
