  • FFP Effect On Championship Spensing This Season

Just listened to the Open all R's podcast - always a good listen apart from that "gob shite" Paul Finney. Anyway, one piece of interesting information I did pick up was the fact that this time last year Championship clubs had spent £220 million pounds on transfer fees.

This window only £60 million has been spent so far. The reason - FFP hanging over all those clubs that have "invested" massively into trying to get to the promised land and failed, now having to cut their cloth accordingly.

Personally, think with all the business we have done over this window we now have a wage bill that more in keeping with our income and if we can maintain our Championship status, we can look to "kick on" in future seasons, whilst half of the teams around us look to balance the books and ditch all their better players!!

We're actually very much ahead of the pack, as it happens. Well most, anyway... Bristol City, Brentford and perhaps Swansea are above all right now.

But yes, you're right and the Podcast was also spot on. FFP is creating a huge gap but in theory the chance to go up is becoming a more even playing field. Derby, Sheff Weds and Leeds wont be able to hide behind selling their ground no longer...

It'll be interesting, I for sure think this year we will be safe, anything more a bonus. But with that in mind we can kick on.

True... but going up and getting parachute payments also helps.

Doesn't this just increase the gulf between established Premier League teams and those dreaming of getting to the Premier League.

But when clubs get there they need to have a really good set up in order to stay there, but also be prepared to pay out stupidly high transfer & agents fees plus ridiculous wages.

And do all that on one year contracts in case they come straight back down...clubs are forced to gamble and then shafted if the gamble doesn't pay off. Parachute payments help but contracts are contracts.

Yes exactly. It’s why FFP was introduced - to keep the likes of us away from the likes of them....
