The local players QPR managed to miss

Blimey, had no idea about John Barnes. Not only local but a fan too: http://www.westlondonsport.com/qpr/f...-missed-201117

Always had the impression that scouting was never our strongest suite and despite all the talk we have yet to see how the current team manages.

Back in the late 60s early 70s pretty much anyone could recommend a kid and they would get asked along for a trial, and that was how it was with all but the top clubs. It was pretty ad hoc, but I have a suspicion that more kids made the transition from trial to first team squad than they do now, irrespective of point of origin. Only a suspicion, no figures to back it up.
