If we're saying Furlong is not good enough to play RB which is his specialist position why is manning up to the job when he is a midfielder

Manning is a midfielder in my book and that's where he should play unless it's an absolute emergency and there are no other options

He is a lefty but his righty is good enough. There are many leftys playing on the right and vice versa and he would be a good choice as RB, RWB, LB or LWB. Pawel as RWB and Manning as LWB is another interesting option and something for the more conservative "the dominant foot closest to the sideline" brigade.
