I already wrote a thread about this issue some weeks ago. The club is still insisting to give the new 'young' players a 3 year contract. CW, Borysiuk, Chery, Bidwell, Ngkbokoto (!!), Lynch, Cousins.....the list goes on. I see most of these players will be successful with the R's, however, after two seasons here they will be on their last year of the contract and the vultures will be eyeing the proceedings. I say a four year contract makes more sense and if a player is not a success, he can always be loaned out, as JET and Doughty found out! After all, I also assume that wages is not an issue anymore. Its the only issue that I do not agree upon with Les and Hoos.

You try getting a player who thinks he's destined for better things to sign a 4 year contract! We're now a stepping stone for players, 3 years is the best for all parties. -

How do we know we haven't got clauses in there that allows a year extension if things go well or whether performance triggers an improved contract with an extension?Comment

Contracts can always be extended at any time if both parties agree.

Very true. However, my point is that some of these players may grow in stature thus having a good transfer fee on their heads. With only a year remaining on a contract, the club is left powerless to stop a player from leaving early and on a limited transfer fee. C. Austin is a good example. With less then two years on his contract left, the asking price was 15 million.....with 6 months left, 4 million. This is basically my point.Comment

What's funny? Players like Chery and Ngbakoto are signing to play regularly in a high profile league in the hope that they can achieve promotion with us. If we fail to achieve promotion, they're putting themselves in the shop window for a move to the premier league.Comment

Hence the new approach. It's all about giving younger players the stage to perform and if they do that, we benefit by hopefully gaining promotion. If not, but they perform then we're in a position to make a healthy profit on the sale and bring in the next talent. It gives us the chance to be successful and also appeals to players as they know they can get their move if they perform.
Hopefully they're right regarding Chaz as he deserves it but if Saints play with one up top, I'll be amazed if he gets the nod ahead of Long.Comment
