I think the point of a 1 year rolling contract is that on any given day, there is a year left. Makes it very simple to pay it up, with only an obligation of 1 years salary.
On the flip side, the compensation wouldn't be so much if someone were to poach him, but currently, I doubt there's much chance of that happening.
