Southampton can't just pass him on as he's our player. If they no longer want him and want to opt out, and return him to us, we can then deal with Liverpool. Equally if Liverpool enquire to us, we approach Southampton and put it to them, but in that case, they may either mutually agree to end the current deal to allow it to happen and cut their losses on a player they've barely utilised, or could make out they want to retain him and try to haggle some compensation deal for their benefit.
