I met him on a night bus after the first leg of the play off semi against Wigan. We were bound for Hammersmith, spoke about the game then exchanged a polite social utterance before parting ways, him off into Hammersmith and me into darkness of the early morning down the Fulham Palace road. I didn't look back, but I thought of him all the way to Putney. True story.
