I take it no one on this thread slating Carroll for passing sideways will be joining the moaners next June when England are knocked out of the WC and we have the tired old debate about why as a nation we are unable to retain the ball and build attacks.

those people are idiots. We will never outpass most of the teams at the world cup. We should play to our strenghts, solid defence and play at a high tempo. Balls in the box, use wingers, good delivery etc. No point just keeping possession if you do nothing with it....and that sums us up too. Carroll is a prime example. Looks good with his simple passing, but we go no where. Give me Henry alongside Barton, and Adel/Niko infront of Austin with 2 wingers on the flanks.Comment

Yesterday, against one of the best (if not THE best) side in the division, we started with the lightweight and inexperienced Tom Carroll alongside the crab-like Gary O'Neil. Harry simply got it wrong. Karl Henry's steel over Carroll's lightweight inexperience and a ****** winger with pace, i.e. Hoilett, instead of O'Neil. I presume O'Neil was meant to provide solidity, but with a 5 man midfield, those were two wrong picks - in fact I would've preferred Jenas over O'Neil. It was an incredibly frustrating game to watch (I was there), made even worse by that poor excuse of a referee. And as an aside, what was the point of getting Chevanton on short-term loan and never playing him? Surely if AJ is unfit (an extremely likely event), then we need cover, in order to have the second striker option, something that might've made the difference yesterday.Comment
