But surely you just buy a defender, making the defence stronger and not needing to have AJ on the wing? And you'd want Phillips on the wing when fit anyway surely? Seems a bit mental to go to these lengths when surely we could just get a defender in instead?

You don't always need to play 5 in midfield.

But when you're playing a good team with good players, you need to bolster the midfield and Sidwell does that well.

I think the interest in Parker started when we thought Barton was leaving. I read that Parker was only offered a year's contract with a possible extension. This is perhaps the real reason he went to Fulham. Offering a 33 year old a three year contract smells of desperation.

I don't trust Barton, he is unreliable. Same with Diakite. This is why I think it would be good to have Sidwell, he puts in a shift.

That midfield gives protection to defence which isn't as strong.

Actually a good shout. Decent midfielder who is savvy in the middle of the park. Not only does he put his foot in but also has a decent range of passing. Would excel in the championship but not a priority area for us
