So you don't think that players and agents in many cases wait to see what offers are on the table before making their decisions? I had no idea players signed the first contract put in front of them. I bow to your superior knowledge of the transfer market.....
Supporting QPR isn't just about a football team. It's about roots and identity.

My personal opinion is that you need to be settled early doors - remember how we started last season? - and that playing a late game in the window leaves you vulnerable to other agendas. Which is one reason why the whole window concept has come in for so much criticism recently.

Would someone like Gerry Francis be good to bring in to help the board?

We need someone that cares for this club.

If you are looking for big names on big contracts it really don't look to me like Harry has the budget Hughes had for that.
So I think most likely the remainder of the window will look a lot like the window so far - lots of newspaper headlines and gossip - not much movement in - signing bargains and freebies.
For "mind blowing" probably have to wait for the loans. A manager with good connections can get good players cheap via loans but even then I wouldn't expect Defoe and Crouch types.
Building a title winning team on a shoestring budget with 20 players leaving and all of last seasons baggage is a mountain to climb. Might take a could years but at least the club is moving in a better direction.

^^ this squad isn't being built for a couple years IMO, these old players will be worse next year. looks like we're going for it this year

i dont want big names but we need variety & depth

Can anybody put up the exact quote from HR? IIRC he said something like he hopes to get some signings that would blow our minds, not give a cast iron guarantee that he would. For what it's worth I'm delighted with the window so far and the team, plenty of time yet for signings and loans.

Not worth trawling around for the quote mate. You are right that he did say he hoped to get some that would. They are the critical words that so very many people have overlooked, just so they have something to whinge about. But putting the quote back up will not change anything
Again, for what it's worth, I agree with the sentiments in your post

Yes, I feel most of us don't realise how difficult it is to attract decent PL players who are still very much in demand at that level to be persuaded to leave all that behind and drop a division. Money doesn't seem to be the issue, because there's no doubt that we can match and better what's available from PL teams in many cases. It comes down I believe to a player's ambition, prestige and also the uncertainty of our prospects this season. In fact, if a top PL player chooses us over continuing at that level, you would have to question their judgement and motives; hard for us to acknowledge that, but if we were still in the PL, we would feel pretty certain that all things being equal money wise we would always be able to trump a championship club in attracting talent.

Leaving it until the window almost closes gets you signings like Ferdinand, SWP, Cisse, Zamora, Mbia, Granero i.e. players you wouldn't normally chase or pay prices you would not want to pay if only yopu had more time to shop around.

By the way, I wsnt expecting big name Premiership or La Liga stars to join QPR, but unerathing some talented players from lower leagues or abroad would have been 'mind blowing'. Swansea managed to bring in players like Jordi Gomes and that dutch midfielder who later suffered two serious knee injuries from Spanish and Dutch clubs.

I would have though that McLaren would have recommended some decent but little known players from his spell in Holland and Germany.

But they might soon be getting desperate given that Zamora and Johnson are injured.

Thats fair enough mate and tbh there have been some disappointments imo too - wanted Parker/Barton in the middle and Remy/Crouch up front and Townsend and some others and could have done that and still saved a fortune and I dont see the current squad finishing top 2. But so far Harry seems to be working with about 10% of the budget Hughes had - so unless that changes he cant hardly buy anyone really. Maybe the chairman will buy some. On the plus side - last May I would have taken the window, results, and performances so far.

Simplistic or not; Two wins and a draw so far is what I would call mindblowing. Compared to last season that is.
