I think that part of the plan was to let him go to some warmer weather - game time or not.

Anyone with knee damage will tell you that trying to rehabilitate it in the damp and cold is not good at the best of times......

And Ironically, it also may have severed to reset the expectations of Ale, and more importantly his agent, of where his current level really is......
