If we'd left a space open in August couldn't we have named DJ in the squad when AJ got injured. I don't think DJ had gone on loan at this time.

You can't 'leave spaces open' if you have senior players available at the club. We have 30ish, so we have to fill the 25

Surely if you have players who you dont fancy and know are not going to play you dont have to name them in the squad, obviosuly the risk is if you get injurys you have to play kids under 21 so if you wanted to name a 16 or 20 man squad you could but your prevented after naming it from going out and making purchases.

I can see the benefit of not naming 25 if you know a player is not going to get a game, regardless, and the off chance a top free transfer becomes available i.e. there is talk Madrid are on the verge of cancelling Kaka's contract, not saying we would go for him but players of that stature would be nice to have the option of adding in the next month or so

dont see the point of just bulking up the squad for the sake of it with players like hogan who won't feature anyway, only to see us kicking ourselves because some fantastic out of contract player comes available next month and we can't sign him. wd rather we trimmed the wage bill, got those players out on loan and as soon as possible off the books next summer to give more funds to strengthen the starting 11.

Pretty sure what I said is correct. I think it is to stop the massive clubs hoarding loads of players but only naming a squad of 20ish, calling up players from their reserves as required. This rule encourages clubs to move on players who arent in the first 25
