  • where did it all go wrong?

swansea came up with us through the play offs , didnt have a bad first season in the prem we just about stayed up, this season looking like a good solid prem side and a cup final as well , where as we have struggled all season and look favorites to go down! what have they done that we didnt do and can we learn from them? by the way i still hate the welsh kennys but maybe im just bitter!

The problem with us was too many managers and too many players. You realise we've had 45 players in 3 years!

The only sensible manager we had was Warnock and matey should had stuck with him and backed him. He was building a good side pre premiership and should had been backed when we were promoted.

Actually, the squad Warnock was building surpassed itself with the promotion first time round. Remember, when he took over we were a shambles looking like heading back to league 1. We had some really shabby players on joke contracts. What Warnock did was nothing short of a miracle and actually that is where it all went wrong. He needed another season in the Championship to get his own players in and gel a hard working team (like Norwich) and impress a style of play on his squad (like Swansea) but it all happened over night.

Last year Norwich and Swansea were able to utilise the squads they had, with some good additions because the players they already had were familiar with the style of play and were all singing from the same song sheet. Ours were still scratching their heads at the Faurlin affair and just how the hell we got promoted. Then Flabbio refused to release money to get a couple of decent players in to supplement the squad and once TF took over, there was no blue print for success, just a chuck some money at some decent names and it will all come together.

I blame Steve Claridge, talked us into a one man team which we believed at one point.

                  On a serious note....

They have adopted a passing game style for a few years now and rather instead of signing BIG names, they signed players who could cope very well into that system and of course had managers who breath this kind of play style.
Also kept a great deal of their promotion winning players for maintaining club culture.
We (MH and staff) dealt with the old guard as if they were garbage.

Excellent set up at Swansea from the top down.

I also think that we get a very very tough time from the media with rumours stories and general sh** flying around on an almost daily basis. Doesn't make it easier for us. Clubs like Swansea get nothing but got publicity it seems.

In all honesty there are hundreds of moments when it's gone wrong for us since we came out.

Lets not forget Warnock loaned out Clint to Forest and if you were at MK Dons away you will know that the wheels had well and truly fallen off the warnock bandwagon while he was down in cornwall and his coaches were down the pub. with the exception of faurlin and adel we had a championship squad (plus a few really good battlers). swansea's style was already well suited to the prem. added to which they added to their squad incredibly astutely, we just bought a huge number of mediocre but big named players mainly well past their best. the contrast is very striking.

We bought too quickly, if we'd bought the players we did in over a 24 month period, instead of 12, it would be much much better.

Swansea I think have 1 or 2 players max from their Championship team left playing, they have bought more then people realise. We still have Hill, Derry, Mackie, Tarbs, Faurlin as regulars! But we still get all the stick!

IMO, it went wrong when Warnock didnīt get his chance to buy players like Graham etc. in his first transfer window. Since then? well, OK.. we all know what happended.
