Rigg's departure-Bosingwa rumpus

Is it just coincidence it happened at the same time? Harry is quoted as saying some agents made a lot of money out of Rangers (we all know which one in particular he was referring to). Mike Rigg as responsible, presumably, for contracts - at least to the extent of saying to Beard, Fernandes and co "if you want x player you will have to pay them y amount." After his bust up with Bosingwa, Harry probably went through the contracts and was open mouthed at the amounts - if he think the owners "had their pants taken down", it seems likely he told the owners that Rigg had taken them for mugs. Just my reading.

All I would say against Harry's outburst is that he is a master of spin - he could have come out with a similar quote about our players being overpaid at any time since he has been here, yet he chooses the day of his first defeat when frankly we played as poorly as we did under Hughes, arguably worse in some cases. Could there be an element of wanting to distract attention from how, after a much improved display against Fulham, we seem to be back to where we started? Sorry if this sounds overly cynical, but just wondering...

I dont think he'd have come out with that if we'd drawn or won. But saying that I dont think it was as calculated as you describe. I think it was partly borne out of the frustration of being unable to hold out in the final 10 minutes for a draw, and partly over his annoyance of the Bosingwa situation. I agree he has probably now had a chance to go over some of the players' contracts but I dont think there's any more to it than that.

Makes sense. What he said also draws the distinction between good players and not good players and puts that at the front. So many times that gets overlooked in football talk but actually if you want to progress you got to start by thinking about that long and hard. But it rarely happens. Instead the focus gets replaced by must sign young players, must sign star players, must sign foreign players, must sign British players, must sign flair players, must sign hard working players, blah blah blah.

I think it is that way because so much football discussion comes from people who would not know a football from a tomato! which helps create this weird bubble world that football exists in. So when well intentioned people try to work in that world they can easily get sucked into the BS and miss the wood for the trees. Focusing on good players is a rock to cling on to amid all the crazyness and keeping that focus will always bear fruit.

I think Harry probably didn't realise the extent of the task in front of him, and how badly the club had been run under the old management. Honestly I'm a little surprised at the extent to which Fernandes and Beard got taken for a ride by Hughes and Joorabchian.

It gives quite a jolt when you look at it. TBF to a non football person, like owners and directors usually are, last summer would probably look a good window because it is "good on paper" which is how they would judge it.
Something I do find difficult to understand is this - Hughes is no dummy, look at his awesome summer signings at City, but comparing that list to this summers list is chalk and cheese. I really cannot see what he was thinking.

Perhaps it was just lazy management given what appears was an increasing influence of Kia. To me it sounds like Kia suggests the players and Hughes said yay or nay. Got lucky with what was offered to him at City fell on face at Rangers. Seems like the days have gone of proper scouting and managers prefer to have players offered on a plate instead of getting out their on a cold wednesday night to see a player with the naked eye

Fair point. The managers who still go scouting and live for football are more marginalised now. There are a lot of people around the game who wouldn't even claim to know anything about football do but they still have a lot of influence. There are good old school managers about in the EPL - Moyes, Allardyce, Ferguson, Redknapp - I think they all still get out on those cold nights and stay involved because they genuinely love the game. An experienced manager can tell a lot more in 5 minutes watching a player with the naked eye than all the spreadsheet stats and youtube compilations put together.
