An extract from an excellent obituary of the great man:

"At a smaller club (QPR) that had only won a single major trophy previously, Sexton had the freedom to create a team that more closely mirrored his own football philosophy. In his second season in charge, QPR were runners-up in the league. Sexton was a student of Rinus Michels and Dutch "total football", a fluid and highly technical system in which all 10 of a team's outfield players can switch positions quickly to maximise space on the field. He would sometimes fly to Holland at his own expense to watch games. At QPR he inherited a talented group of players, including Gerry Francis, Stan Bowles and Frank McLintock, and also signed Don Masson. He instilled in the side a discipline and aesthetic that was ahead of its time, emphasising the importance of diet and fitness, and video analysis using footage that he had painstakingly edited himself."

New players at QPR, the whole team aswell, should be shown a fair few of the matches this team played.
TOTAL FOTBALL is what this club were internationally known for. Those of you which want to see more of it; watch U-tube clips of the Dutch team in the world Championship in 1974.

Gutted to hear this news. Like others of a certain age I started going in the early-mid 70's and Dave Sexton had the hoops playing such brilliant football. So close in 75/76. Best Rangers Manager Ever.

                RIP to a great man

                      Harry Redknapp
HARRY Redknapp has led the tributes to former R’s manager Dave Sexton who sadly passed away on Sunday.

Sexton, of course, masterminded the R’s to a second place finish in the old First Division in 1975/76, as well as managing the likes of Leyton Orient and Manchester United.

Players to pay their respects to Sexton

THE R’S squad will pay their respects to former Rangers boss Dave Sexton by wearing black armbands on Tuesday night.

Sexton – who managed QPR between 1974 and 1977 – passed away on Sunday, aged 82.

As a mark of respect, the team will wear black armbands for tomorrow night’s Barclays Premier League fixture against Sunderland at the Stadium of Light.

                            Tributes from the 75-76 side...

Don Masson - "He was an unbelievable coach, unbelievable. We used to do things then, thirty years ago that people are saying now is the right thing to do. Our training techniques were so ahead of their time."

Frank McLintock - "He was full of ideas, always going abroad to pick up new things and he ended up getting us playing similar to how Barcelona do now."

As previously mentioned a man ahead of the times. Think the England job would have been right up his street.
