I trust those who are cheering Team GB understand the implications of a successful Olympic football team. Has it not occurred to you why the FAs of Scotland Wales and NI didn't want to take part?

Because of the threat to their independence. Why? Because many members of FIFA believe that, as Britain is a unified state it should have a single football team and not the current four we have now. See this link under London 2012:

For those of you willing on team GB to success are in fact assisting in the possible abolition of the FAs of Britain, because if it's successful, the clamour to abolish the associations and merge them under a permanent British FA would be overwhelming. It'll be goodbye England and hello Britain. Even the official fan clubs of all four home nations issued a joint statement opposing the team because they understand the threat to the individual teams. It's a pity some of the blinkered Rule Britannia mob on here can't see that too. Unless of course you're happy to abolish the England national team in favour of a team GB in future.

In addition, Sepp Blatter and David Taylor, General Secretary of UEFA, both say this could threaten the existence of the four home nations. Here's a good piece:
