The odd thing is that many seem to think the new signings are no good before they've been judged over 10 or so games.

Its probably the same group of individuals who all thought Ben Watson could walk on water, but had never seen him play. At the height of the Ben Watson threads I challenged posters as to how many had actually seen him play. I think 3 people replied.

The issue at the moment is confidence in the club to make a good signing. I think they have done a pretty good job so far and the squad is stronger now than at this point last year. [overall].

We seem to foget that the likes of Stan Bowles, Don Masson, Phil Parkes, Dave Thomas, Dave Seaman, Darren Pea****, Trevor Sinclair all came to us from "small" clubs with no real pedigree, but proved to be very astute buys. I'm sure I've missed out many others.

Fair point! In the main they were estabilished in the same way Cox or Beckford are, but we didn't know for sure if they could step up a class.

                    Eh?

Only Dave Thomas was the truly established player.

Bowles was all but thrown out of City and branded a troublemaker. Parkes was from Walsall, Sinclair a kid from Blackpool (again bombed out by City), Seaman from lower region 2nd tier Brum and Pea**** a kid from Hereford.

I'm not enthused by the new guys but not a good example! :exciting:

The only "established" players we've ever signed, that you knew would do a job, you can probably count on your fingers.......

                    McLintock
                    Hollins
                    Webb
                    Reid
                    Wilkins
                    Falco

Even then, some of the established players signed have been monumental f*** ups......

                    Hateley
                    Sheron
                    Jones
                    Kiwomya
                    Charles
                    Brock

I picked my word very carefully, meaning they had been around for a time whether successfully or not and were not untried kids. So I still maintain the were all 'established' players.

I do not think "big name" is an issue, it is more to do with experience.

Lita has a good CV in the championship, he has promotion experience, played in the premiership, also has adapted to various squads.

Vignal, good CV, experience in the premiership, also has experience in promotion and working in a team.

                            etc etc

Faurlin, unknown, not tested and never played in england, never been involved in a promotion team.

Pelleicori, not a great goal record, never played in the England, untested.

                            etc etc

That is why I would rather we went with players who have experience and have been tested at this level. That is just my view, others will disagree but I have watched football and played long enough, therefore I know this league and what is needed to secure promotion.

                                2) boosts morale of players and fans, giving the club a positive enthusiastic feel, which could lead to improved results for everyone.
                                3) shows the club has ambition to get out of the league, like the above improving morale and also attracts new fans and a new better calibre of players to the club. further improving the club of course.
                                4) BIG NAME players are usually big names because they are PROVEN. Lita and beckford would get us goals in my eyes as may pellicori, who knows. But pellicori is more of a risk coming from abroad as we have found out in the past with players like parejo, dicarmine.
Bang on - would like to have said it myself. Well done Marc.
