A Stat Summarising the Quality of our Passing This Year

Made 8,801 passes this season..... With 2,695 of those not reaching our player!

Over 30% of our passes have gone astray....

Hopefully Sparky working on the basics out in Portugal!

    What's a good return?
I have supported Rangers for 55 seasons, since March 1969.

Correct but if this many passes are going to the opposition then you are decreasing your chance of goals whilst also increasing the oppositions chance

There's no exact science when looking at stats, so your statement although correct in principle may not actually follow on the pitch.

To score goals you need to take chances with posession by trying difficult final balls etc, most of which would fail. As long as one comes off you could win the match. The flipside is a team could be lame and keep posession along their back 4 and although their stats would look good, they have no hope of ever scoring a goal and winning the match.

These stats would be more relevant if they highlighted passes in the final 3rd or you own half, forward, backward passes etc.

Indeed. And I wouldnt mind such a poor passing record if we were popping in 30 yarders and scoring goals, but we are struggling to find the net aswell as being poo at passing

That said, I think we will still survive..... just.

I wonder what the stats are for shots to goals ratio? SWP for instance has a stunning conversion rate if what I saw recently was correct = 105 shots and no goals.

I wouldn't mind betting that we are way down the list on this stat if it exists

again I think that shows the selectivity of stats. am sure you are right it wd show a horrendous conversion rate but that is at least in part down to the fact that we have had so few bodies in the box that midfielders have taken to hitting wild shots from 30 yards because there just isn't anything much else on. as ever, each stat just begs for another stat. i wd like to know how many shots we have had in the six yard box this season. bet you cd almost count them on one hand.

                    Agree with all you say.
Oh and apparently you can only count the last stat on one hand if you're a Narwich fan

Hughes seems fairly big on his numbers and stats so I'm sure he'll know how bad some of our passing is- although only watching games could have told him that too.

Is Faurlin still top for the most successful tackles??

No, but to make the argument relevant, you should be comparing us to the likes of Wolves, Wigan, Bolton, Blackburn, Fulham, Villa etc.

We don't pretend to be competing with the likes of the teams you mention.

To be honest most of the goals we have conceded have mainly been caused by passing the ball to the opposing player. We certainly have gifted many goals away this season and the stats and table doesn't lie.
