I don't think anyone really does though.
It is all down to opinions. Same as deliberate handball (Micah Richards against Liverpool, was never a penalty - sliding in to block a shot it rebound upwards, not goalwards, and stikes his hand ref has a clear view yet awards a pen!

Also the offside rules has been messed up, no one knows who is interfeering with play or not. Is not standing in front of a keeper interfeering, or being in an offside position and running for a ball only to leave it for a teammate who came from an onside position to take it on and score?

I think most players just carry on as they normally would and hope for the Officials' opinion to be in their favour and that is not a good way to referee matches.

Red cards are just a terrible idea in general. Ruin games so often and they dont make sense. The same crime in the 1st minute and in the 89th minute end up getting way different punishments.

even the refs dont seem to know the rules, ref blows for qpr free kick in return barton gets sent off for a intended head butt that ref doesnt see, johnson strangles barton no action = free kick awarded to 6 fingered carrot crunchers
