That's what I'm saying -- no matter where I look, I cannot find cheap train fares. I just don't know what I'm doing wrong, and it is so frustrating. Basically, if I can't find cheap train tickets to Newcastle away, it will have to be the TV for us, as Josie won't tolerate the length of the coach journey.

That's what I don't get. Although I'm going up by coach on Saturday, I just looked at Trainline out of interest, went on their Best Fare Finder for a return to Liverpool on Saturday, and the cheapest fares came up as £26.50 out, £33.50 back = £60.
Even starting the process to buy, and finding a cheaper return on a slower train, although fares of £24 and £33 came up, they also come up as "Not available for this route" when selected -- the cheapest return is £76 -- more expensive than two singles.
          What AM I doing wrong???
          It is very, very frustrating!!!!!

Swanley, check around 2 and a half to 3 months before the match. That's when train companies usually release cheap fares. Better still enter your details/dates here and they will send you an alert once the cheap fares become available to book:

                Thanks, but I did.
I also checked Newcastle fares on the Best Fare Finder for November, as that's 3 months away so would have cheap fares. The cheapest Off peak super saver return ticket on a slow route etc. etc. was £110-odd. That's 3 months in advance.
Perhaps they just see me coming!!!

Plus the 10quid bet on a "DJ first goal 2-1 Rangers win" bet at Coral?

But fair play mate Everton will be a cracking day out i reckon!

Yes, it isn't until the new year, but I was just doing a little test case of booking 3 months in advance to see how the land lies.

So why are the current prices for 3 months time £110 for the cheapest off-peak super saver? It's not £110 for tomorrow, or next week, but for 3 months time -- November (yes, I know our game isn't until the new year).
When and if anyone can get me return tickets for the Newcastle game for £35, please post the link, because I really am at a loss as to what I am doing wrong.
