I seem to remember we nearly scored one of the greatest own goals of all time (about 40 yards) at 4-5 from the right back can't remember the name off hand, Hucker tipped it on to the bar.
Will never forget the moment in the loft as a 10 year old when we equalised. Best moment in football bar none

Didn't enter my head to leave. I wasn't a masochist but 0-4 was a travesty and did not reflect the play at all. Everyone around me in Paddock agreed at half-time that the game was not over and we would (note would and not could) turn it around in second half - sort of pulll 2 or 3 back kind of thing.
I know you get different views/impressions from different parts of ground but I did not see many leave at all; I'd have said barely 100 bods left but judging previous posts I must've got that badly wrong! Irrespective of how many left the noise levels just grew and grew and grew - roar that greeted our 5th must have registered on the Richter scale.

It was me who put it on Youtube a few years ago. Found the old VHS copy of the tape and it was on it's last legs so thought I;d better act before that great was lost forever (was only 8 myself so memories of it are a bit then apart from having the sniffles and a major hump at half time - think I vowed never to come back as it was only my third live game)

onlly game I can really remember leaving very early - though not at half time, was when we lost 1-6 to Leeds at Elland Road...but it was the freezing cold that did it!

As Pedal says we were 0-4 down at HT but hardly being outplayed. Geordies scored every time they went forward and Waddle buried anything that came his way.
I recall thinking of leaving over a very cheap pint of Guiness (about 50p at the time !)
I decided to stay in the belief we'd pull a goal or two back, but not really considering anything more than that. Many others did leave.
But not as many as those that left with about 8 mins to go, when Newcastle broke away to score and go 5-3 up after what seemed the end of a brave fight back. Loads left.
At the end I recall a couple of Gerodies in the Lower Loft shaking everyones hand having all witnessed one of the best games ever.
Bobby Robson (England Manager, if not at the time, then soon after) was quoted as saying "One of the best games of football I've had the pleasure of seeing, and I've seen thousands")
Jack Charlton (Newcaslte Manager at the time) quote "One of the worst games I've ever seen"
Says it all really.
