    Twitter and Football...Discuss...

    Was just reading this..

    Mick McCarthy takes on Twitter
    Gearóid Ó Gruagáin, 26 July 2011

Wolves manager Mick McCarthy has launched an outburst against social media site Twitter.

Captain Fantastic had this to say about Twitter “Players are going to get themselves into trouble over Twitter, I can tell. I can’t ban it and I’m not going to try. But they have to be careful what they say on it about the club and its policies. If they put a team selection up, which I’m sure some disgruntled numpty will at some stage, they will be in trouble. Then I think they can get fined. It is forbidden and I think it’s unforgivable anyway to make it known just because they are not in the team.”

McCarthy’s paranoia was stoked last year after he missed out on the capture of combative midfielder Steve Sidwell to Fulham. Reserve player Greg Halford had tweeted that Sidwell’s arrival was imminent to Molineux only for a dramatic u-turn to take place once Fulham became aware that the player was on the market.

McCarthy is now taking pre emptive action to ensure that such a situation does not happen again this season. One only wonders what may have transpired in Saipan in 2002 if Twitter was available back then!

And wondered what peoples thoughts were on Twitter?

I've been using it since it launched in 2006. Back then it was like a little club, there seemed to be about 100 mainly tech people and guardian journos using it and now, well, its discussed on CNN and used as massive social media tool.

Players use it to communicate with fans, our club now uses it to announce things before sending the texts out (and then updating the offy). And well, we found out about Dan signing by himself on there before anything else official.

And then there's the fascination with smudge..who i do have to laugh at. My ex boss (michelle who won the apprentice) is going out with the main man at the mirror (took over from Piers morgan) so lets say I have an idea of Smudge and his "source" ;) Anyways, whats peoples thoughts on it?

Smudge, as a respected senior football journalist has proven to be far more reliable than anyone on here. Also he doesn't have the need to have his ego massaged.

I love how McCarthy says the players need to be careful about what they say on the internet and then calls them numpties on the internet.

        Quite the opposite.

And most of his career has been spent working on kids footy titles and organising panini stickers

Whilst that may be true, kids' football titles have been and are the biggest selling football titles in the country
