For the last three years he'd been given completely free reign to overspend on average players and skyrocket the wagebill way past the club's means (£10m more than Spurs, £20 more than Everton) and was still unable to make any progress past 6th. Soon as he's asked to curb it so the club doesnt go the way of Portsmouth he takes one look at his own limitations and does one, with no better job available or likely now to ever be.
