Hooper: £2.5m bid by 4 Clubs

Hooper is a wanted man, Middlesborough have launched a bid believed to be around £2.5m with Leeds, Wigan and Celtic also keen to sign the ace striker.

I guess that now officially ends any more speculation linking him to QPR.

I had given up on him weeks ago,i think he is going to Celtic, and we would never spend £2.5 million on a striker.

I think £2.5m is well out of our reach. We did enquire about him but soon cooled off when we knew the price. I think he's go to Celtic as well.

There is 2,500,000 reason why he will not be coming to W12.

seriously bad tho aint it, it dont take rocket science to work out that a top striker would near on garuntee us the premiership and 90 million. and 2 and a half mill to billionaires is to much. hows that work, why dont people put out the money to get the money in lower league football? i so dont get it.
if it was one of their factories and a consultant came in and said 'buy that machine for 3 mill and it will get you 90 mill in a year' would they even think about it for a millisecond, the machine would be there in days.

Also-football ain't like that. Liverpool bought Torres, hasn't exactly guaranteed them the success they desired.

Its a fair point tho. I've prob banged on more than most about the need for a top striker but the economics isn't as simple as some fans suggest. Yes you get the tv money etc for getting promoted but much more than that is then swallowed up in transfers/ wages etc. If you are very rich and involved in a football club I agree it only makes sense to be involved in the premier league but lets not be naive enough to suggest its any kind of investment.

Let's nail this "Premiership is worth 90 million a year" statement.

I think it comes from the media promoting the Championship Play Off Final as the most lucrative domestic game (cue Jeremy Clarkson) IN THE WORLD !

Whilst money is a major incentive, I think promotion to the Premiership is probably only worth around £40-£50 million in the 1st year, obviously depending on where you finish.
The majority of the £90 million quoted is in the following 4 years with parachute payments of £16m, £16m, £8m & £8m.

So yes, there is £90 million on the table, but it's over 5 years at worst.
Better still, of course, if you avoid immediate relegation back to the Championship.

That said £3m to £40m still offers great reward. Speculate & Accumulate.
Although, again, it depends largely on how many £2.5m players you buy and their wages, etc. Hooper, Taarabt, Beattie.....

vast majority of clubs in the prem run at big losses, there is no pot of gold there because everything they earn is taken away and more due to the massively inflated transfer/ salary market. fans need to be a bit careful about making out "investment" is some kind of a no-brainer.
