  • Gavin Mahon's Predicament

Apparantly his contract is up for renewal in the summer. He was the lynchpin of our successful run in October.

He could be risked for the last couple of games this season to prove to Warnock that he warrants another year, on the other hand it might be considered pointless to risk injury with a couple of games to go, but Warnock might not keep him.

    So what does he do?

And does he warrant another year on his contract?

    What would you do

i think hes worth another year. Hes a good leader, and has the vital ability that a lot of our players dont have - keeping it simple

I would consider a 1 year extension for Mahon even as just a squad player he was brought in to add experience to side so he could still have a role to play under Warnock.

Keep him. He does things simple and effectively. A role model for midfielders. Give him a job in the coaching set up as well. So in a way, he is one for the future.

He is worth a one year extension - Warnock should know enough about him to take a chance without risking him this season.

Otherwise - can we go for a pay as you play type deal - and then release him before the window closes if Warnock doesn't fancy him? Although. to be fair to him Gav needs to know sooner rather than later for his own future (both playing and financially) I guess so you are right Pete - it's a dilema for all involved.

              I like Mahon.
But no point in having him, Legertwood and Rowlands.

And that's before we get to any new midfield targets in the summer.
Warnock clearly likes Faurlin (rightly), so that leaves one place in the team for a defensive midfielder.

We can't have him, Rowlands and Leigterwood.

We've had them for a few seasons now and we are not making any progress. We need some fresh blood in the middle.

I prefer Mahon to Leigterwood but they will keep him given his age and the fact they have just given him a new contract.

Good back up player, offer him slightly less on his contract as he will predominantly be used as back up. Don’t want to make huge changes in the summer as it could have serious repercussions on team cohesion. Far more players above him to get rid of first IMO

It probably depends on what players NW can bring in. If Mahon is a regular in midfield next season then I can't see us being good enough to be challenging for promotion. However, dependant on his recovery from injury he might be a good player to have in the squad so it may be worth offering him a year's extension, although he may be looking for a longer deal than that.

Spot on. We need a back up player if the newcomers get injured, and also for the sake of continuity.
Besides, who really know what Warnock sees in Leighterwood long term.

wouldnt give him a new contract,we should be looking for way better if promotion is our goal next season, providing we stay up this season(we still need 5 more points)

As others have said we don't need Rowlands, Leigertwood and Mahon all fighting for one position especially if we strengthen this department (Tonge, Montgomery, Danns and Ambrose have all been rumoured recently and can all play CM).

Warnock needs to assess both Mahon and Rowlands to see what type of players they are after injury. It's easy to say keep this play or reject that player but none of know if we will see the same Rowlands again or if he's had his day. Mahon has had good spells and bad spells for this club and Warnock will have to decide if the good outweighs the bad.
