Using 4 out of 5 substitutes

Yes I’m getting old and grumpy, but seeing that we didn’t use all possible substitutes against WHAM, even though Lamptey barely could move and Adamson also had big problems with movement (together with the other really strange substitutions (especially Kemper and Kone), Im wondering if JS has returned from the stroke unit yet?

Someone mentioned you can only use the subs in a maximum of three changes. We used up the three changes, injuries occurred late in the game but by then we had no more windows left to bring on our remaining sub.

I have no idea when his rule came in, its a new one on me, but it seems ridiculous that an injured player has to remain on the pitch.

It may have been better for Lampty to have come off to avoid further damage and set up with ten players on the pitch?

Thought I knew everything but that was new info for me. Cheers. Recommending the stroke unit anyway because of the Kemper -Kone substitutions and leaving no pace and attacking options on the pitch for the last 10 minutes. That’s rolling over and showing the throat.

Guess it’s always needed to have one window for a substitution left when we’re having Lamptey on the pitch.

The mistake was when mbengue came on for poku I think. Admason was. Clearly struggling at that point and if poku had to go off better to bring on someone else at that point. Lamptey was injured after that point so we couldn’t do anything then as three sets of subs done

"The rule limiting English Football League (EFL) managers to a maximum of three opportunities (plus half-time) to make five substitutions came into effect for the 2022–23 season (approved at the EFL Annual General Meeting in June 2022)."

JS is pretty rubbish at using the free HT substitution window. He needs to be more brutal at hooking anyone clearly underperforming (say Kolli at West Ham) at half-time.

There was a match last month where Dunne was hobbling around for last 5 minutes of first half, came out and played about 90 seconds of second half before getting subbed - we literally pee'd away a sub window that should have been avoided. It didn't bite us on the bum then but given how prone our players are to breaking down injured, I feel JS should be more on his toes in terms of shuffling the pack at HT and preserving 3 sub windows. He seems obsessed with the 60ish minute mark though.

Also, I don't like wholesale changes in one go. There was a game last month where we conceded about a minute or so after bringing 2 or 3 subs on and moving players about - it felt like the opposition capitalised on our players still working out their responsibilities in the adjusted set-up.

Obviously every game is different, but outcomes come down to fine margins and I think we can be a bit cuter and more efficient with the substitution windows.
