    The Big Match Revisited

I guess we have all watched the above occasionally and some great Rangers teams and players of the past often show up very well. I admit to rose coloured glasses but I still love and much prefer, the way football was played in those days. Okay I’m getting on a bit but it was such a different watch and always pretty entertaining. God, there were some hard men around but you didn’t see defenders grabbing forwards the way they do now. I believe that needs to be eradicated from the game. I have to admit to not enjoying the game like I used to. I will always be a Rangers man but for me, the enjoyment factor in almost any game is pretty low.

You've just described exactly how i feel. Can't stand modern football , all about money . Back in 70's 80's it was just people playing football , with the odd moron kicking everyone .
It's so bad now , my mate persuaded me to come against Coventry on Saturday and i've been dreading it since he got the tickets.

It was the Big Match that got me into QPR. I was 8/9yrs in 75/76 and that shirt and flowing football just hooked me. I was a glory hunter watching the best football I've ever seen, apart from that Archie Gemmil goal and Mario Kempes in 78. They were my formative years of watching football and its never been quite the same since and it took me another 20yrs to watch a live game at HQ. It seemed normal to support from afar in Pembrokeshire.

In QPR, I chose a lame duck, but im proud of myself for having the strength of character to stick with it. I really couldn't have made a better choice, for all the downs, the rare successes are mind blowing.

There are also a few LBs that i can honestly say I would have been better than in the hoops. But never as good as Rufus......

Ian Gillard was better, and he played for England.

The trouble with far too many modern footballers is the diving and the antics at corners, utter Bol… locks.
I have supported Rangers for 55 seasons, since March 1969.

I was too young to see Ian live, but that whole squad was great I didn't get to HQ until my late 20s, by then I could see Rufus up front. I also regret not seeing Allen/Goddard playing live...they didn't half bang in some goals together.

Rufus went to Fulham FC , I'd see him training most mornings and make the w*nkers sign to him

Something has to be done about that circus of mauling that goes on at corners and free kicks. I have no idea what the rules are. Did I really hear someone opine that it does not matter until the kick as been taken???

Don't know about that in the middle 70s we would only take around a 100 up north most games

I suppose it was hard to put trust in your Leyland Princess to make it there and back without it breaking down or bits falling off of it.

In Spain for a while. Watched us vs Brum today. Last minute equaliser for us by Stevie Burke. Terrible pitch but great to watch. Really sad to see how much excitement has been managed out of the game nowadays.

Trouble with Big Match is they are highlights, usually involving meaningful games between in-form teams. There definitely were stinkers back then. That said, the evolution of footy over past couple of years is ridiculous, particularly the total unwillingness to lose possession by shooting or playing a pass more than 10yds. Unfortunately I don't see a way back from it - TV idiot armchair fans seem to like all the modern nonsense.

Fair comment. As the game gets richer the product
(very often) becomes less enjoyable. Success is everything and reduce any/all risks to achieve that. Sometimes I think US money has a lot to answer for. Although I can watch baseball, their other games, particularly basketball, I cannot watch.
Even golf no longer has any personality/ies.
