My dad went awol on 8th May 1945 while doing his basic training on Barnes Common…..so did thousands of others squaddies, he got the bus home, on the #### all night, got the bus back in the morning, the CSM was mighty pissed off with them all.

Mate of mine, said hid Great Grandfather (possibly GG GF) spent WW1 in prison after going AWOL and getting caught. He faught in the Boar War, survived that and thought hed done his bit, and others could sort out WW1, but he was having none if it.

The Army normally shot deserters, but the vast majority of them had shell shock, all very sad.
