  • The Nottingham Forest Model

After 30 matches this season we are on 34 points. Forest last season were on 33 points after 30 matches. It took Forest another 4 matches to record their 34th point. Forest finished the season in 19th, 7 points ahead of Norwich and therefore clear of relegation. With careful spending and the backing of the manager they currently sit in 3rd place this season.

If Burnley were the example that we failed to follow this season then the example that Forest have set has to be the one that we follow next. IMO there is nothing wrong in looking at the practices of other clubs and either trying to replicate them or steer clear of them. As we all know now Burnley were promoted to the Premiership having been bottom of the league after 4 matches, having backed their manager during this time and allowed him to form his own team. Also Burnley had over a 1000 fewer fans through the gate at every home match than we did last season but they still got out of this league even though they started with a smaller financial pot. Under Davies, Forest have bought experienced Championship players (Adebola, McKenna, Blackstock and Camp) as well as good young players in Gunter and McGoldrick. Davies, along with Pleat, the Chairman and the CEX has formed a well balanced and strong (in terms of depth) squad.

What can we learn from Nottingham Forest and for the matter the likes of Swansea, Cardiff, Leicester, WBA, Newcastle? For a start back the manager. None of the teams sitting in the top 6 have changed their manager since the start of the season. All of the managers therefore had pre season with the players and an opportunity to make mistakes and learn about his players. All of these clubs have a man/men (with a footballing or finance background) in charge of transfers. Nottingham Forest's transfer committee was set up to stop vast amounts of money being spent unnecessarily. Having 4 men make both financial and football decisions stops the club from going into financial meltdown and therefore they are all responsible for the flak rather than just one man. Davies, isn't entirely happy with the committee but having spent £3m on Claude Davis when at Derby means he only has himself to blame for others being cautious.

No longer can QPR, the club, and subsquently the team afford for one non-footballing man to make transfer and contract decisions. Whoever is next appointed into the hotseat will have signed a duff player in his past but his football knowledge alongside Bhattia's financial mind should not only secure the future of the club as a whole but in turn will create a well balanced strong side capable of finally getting us out of this league.

However, we first have to survive. Whether it be Dowie, Warnock, Coppell or Curbishley I think both the fans and the players will have more faith in one of these men then they currently do in Harford.

How much did Forest have to spend to get where they are now:

Of the 18 men in the squad that face WBA last month, 8 of them were already at the club at the start of their 1st season back in the Championship in August 2008. Those players were: Morgan, Wilson, Cohen, Smith, Perch, Chambers, McGugan and Tyson. Meaning that 10 of the 18 have been signed since their promotion a season and a half ago.

As with all deals nowadays the real cost to the club isn’t always publicised and even an approximate figure is questioned. For instance, soccerbase state that Camp cost Forest £100k but I’ve read figures ranging from this figure to £500k. When Camp signed the official story reported that the figure was undisclosed. Using soccerbase, wikipedia as well as the BBC and other football websites here is a cost of what Forest paid for the remaining 10 players.

Camp - £100k (possibly higher but no more than £500k), Shorey – on loan from Aston Villa, Majewski – on loan from Polonia Warsaw, Anderson - £250k, Gunter - £1.75m, McKenna - £750k, Moussi - £250k, Blackstock - £1m (possibly higher but no more than £1.5m), Adebola – Free Transfer and McGoldrick - £1m.

Taking the highest amounts for both Camp and Blackstock and added to the rest of the players who’ve been brought in since they were a Championship team again comes to £5.5m. They have obviously spent money on other players within their squad but that is just how much they have spent on the 10 players who featured yesterday who’ve been brought into the club since August 2008.

Compare the £5.5m they have spent to all of the players in my signature. If the Mittals are serious about this club then appoint an experienced manager and together buy experienced campaigners along with quality youth and have patience.

Forrest are the model we should be adopting. They have hardly spent big but they have backed their manager in a big way.

It's taken them a while but got the right man and backed him.

Their chairman's had plenty of stick for 10 years up here...
We don't see things as they are, we see them as we are...

they went and recruited the best possible guy for the job and have let him get on with it.

Lets hope the board dont scrape when it comes down to the next managerial appointment
