  • Last night and players' performances........

Have had a few hours now to come calm down after last night's game. Given our recent games many of our players thought they just had to turn up and we would win the game. Given that Leicester hardly deserved to beat Reading and we stuffed the latter we were really left with egg on our faces. Too many times our players let us down infront of a big audience. But playing for Rangers now is all about expectation and for 3 or 4 of them they are simply not good enough. One of the reasons we have done well recently is that teams haven't had a go at us. It wouldn't take a rocket scientist to know that the full back positions are a weak link for us. Our plan this season is always to pass th eball out from Cerny and Leicester did their homework and closed down our full backs. Our full backs are not very comfortable on the ball and either don't look for the ball or just get rid of it at the quickest opportunity.

We have played well recently because simply Leighterwood has not been in the middle. He has a very poor touch and cannot pass. He gets away with a lot because of his strength and he is certainly not a captain. He doesn't lead. If he plays, it should be at right back but only as a temporary measure until we get someone in who is specialised in that position. We are clearly lacking Connolly so hopefully he will be back soon. As soon as Hall came in we looked even shakier at the back. For some reason when he plays we never look comfortable.

For Tuesday, we need Watson back in the side and Magilton needs to stop tinkering with the formation during the game. Buz, Tarabat and Routledge kept changing position last night to no avail. Magilton needs a plan B as we can't just keep passing the ball out during the game as other teams have worked us out now. We are so in need of a big powerful striker to lead the line.

    Players' performances:

Cerny- cost us the game but can't be faulted generally as he has saved us so many times. Does need to control his area more. Not comfortable with crosses.

Ramage- very poor once again. Should have closed down his man for their first goal. Not comfortable on the ball and really shows that we need a quality specialised right back.

Stewart- not one of his better games and clearly struggles with strikers who have clever movement. Another one whose strength covers up a lot of his flaws.

Gorks- was not helped by his team mates who didn't want the ball but watsed a lot of possession.

Borrowdale- slightly better than Ramage but first game in ages where a winger as attacked him and he got showed up big time. We are so in need of a quality left back.

Routledge- in and out of the game but was not given much space by Leicester who did their homework.

Leighterwood- poor game. Not a captain. To play centre mid you need to read a game, control a ball and pass a ball. He does none of those. No surprise for us to lose a game with him back in the middle.

Faurlin- kept trying to pick passes out all night but his passing was shocking. Kept finding Leicester players. Must do better on Tuesday.

Buz- I thought was our best player but was not helped by Magilton who was tinkering with him. He has done well playing on the left so keep him there.

Tarabat- scored a good goal but was relatively quiet. Like Routledge, Leicester did their homework and did not give him much space.

Simpson- had a good game but everytime he had the ball, he was not helped by our centre midfielders getting forward to support him. Will be helped by having Watson back on Tuesday.
First game: Arsenal vs Queen's Park Rangers at Highbury, Saturday 17th November 1984.

Good summary to be fair although harsh on Borrowdale. I thought he had a very good second half. Read the passes and was there to cut them out.
    Your mum would love me...

just goes to show how 2 people can see the same game with totally different outcomes, thought we lost it down to our very poor passing, both Ramage & Borrowdale just don't look comfortable with the ball & some of their own players realise this & they don't pass to them often enough, also Stewart had a very bad game (apparently was ill tho) Fraulin just isn't the same player without Watson, Mahon or Rowland's along side him, the sooner we get 2 quality fullbacks in & a natural goalscorer the better (not that we haven't scored enough lately) just that we need quality competition up front

Pretty much agree with Hammersmith, our only players that played to their usual standard were Gorkks and Borrowdale, all the rest were well below their best. Although Buzz was ok he can be a lot better and Routledge only got into the game for the last 10 minutes. We can and will play better but I agree Legs back to full back and Watson or Mahon back into the middle. One positive is that JM won't get Manager of the Month and condemn us to a month of misery, instead of just one night.
        RIP: Doug, Sniffer and Pat

Must have watched a different game. Agree about the full backs but legs was our only player other than gorks who wanted it all night. We looked a different team @ the back when he moved to the defence and hall came on. Stewart borrowdale and ramage in parrticular were shocking. But legs is one of the first names on the team sheet for me

Would agree but not in the middle with Faurlin, Legs empties the midfield to quick for me and leaves big inviting holes for players to run into, how we missed Mahon in the middle.
