Two more for Beckford

Del, If you're talking about Beckford... I agree. £3m is too much money for a player who's contract is up in a few months.

I'm talking about the likes of Simeon Jackson and Lee Barnard, both in the region(ish) of £1m.
And they are both being written off as "not good enough"... not because of their price, but the division they are playing in. Purely that.

And yet Gary Hooper?? He's played 10 games in this division in his entire career, including a spell at Southend in the "lower league", but because of that - he's "proven at this level".
Not aimed at you, or *anyone* in particular, but the general stuff I see written about players from League One makes me wonder if it was a good job the internet wasn't around in the 70's and 80's.

Can you imagine it?

"Stan Bowles, from poxy Carlisle Utd?? We can do better than him, over-rated, wont hack it at our level... etc"

"Les Ferdinand?? From non-league?? WTF are we doing with nobodies like him??... we should get that Lee Chapman from Arsenal, he's a big old lump...etc?"

Oh and Simon Cox. Injured and not getting into the WBA team... he must be a waste of money, after all we're 10 weeks into the season. His career is over. Point proven etc..
It's nonsense.

We have built our entire recent (and pretty successful) history on spotting players like Stan, Trevor Sinclair and Sir Les from these sewers of football, and polishing them, and creating legends. But now?? Nah, not from a good enough "level".


Yeah, yeah, I'll get slaughtered for this by some... but the thought crosses my mind every time I log on to these sites - Who the f**k do we think we are??

I have nothing against signing players from lower leagues and have even advocated doing so, but it has to be at the right price. £1.5-2M for Cox and £2-3M for Beckford are not the right price.

Wolves and Reading have done very well by signing players from lower leagues i.e. Kightly, Edwards, Vokes, Doyle, Hunt, Kitson etc, but the total fees they paid for all of these amount to less then the ridiculous fee Leeds are demanding for Beckford.

I am sure there are plenty of good players playing in Leagues 1 & 2 or even the conference and below, but they are not worth risking 7 figure fees to find out if they can hack it in the CCC.

Fair comments Robbo but my comment regarding Barnard had no reflection on the division he plays in. I don't watch enough of league 1 football so I can't judge whether a player is good enough.
When a fellow fan and poster on this site is a season ticket holder at southend tells me he is not good enough I take his word on that. You are going on the fact that he has scored goals but you don't watch him week in week out like Leigh does. All the above names like Les, sinton etc cost peanuts so for me paying over the odds for Beckford IMHO is a huge gamble as I don't just judge how many goals he has scored in a team that creates hatful chances in a poor league.

its virtually impossible to know who the players are who will do well in the higher leages
ferdinand came out of the conferance and rose to become the best ever striker weve ever had, so we will just have to take chances and hope they do produce
i must admit when i watched beckford in last years play off i was disapointed in him ,but i can only hope if we buy him we may be lucky and he goes on to do the buisiness

Pedant's note. Ferdinand came out of the Vauxhall Opel League (Isthmian) Premier Division. They only attained promotion to the Conference in 1996 on the back of their sell on % they received when Les went to Newcastle.

I AGREE about Beckford.
He is a seperate case... too much money for a player almost out of contract, and wants to go to Newcastle anyway. He's openly said that.

With Barnard, I know that Leighs goes along, and has his opinion... but I live in Essex and know a few Southend fans.
They love him, and they seriously rate him. Honestly.
He's been brought up at Spurs, and is a clever player.

This proves nothing either way, I know.

But all I'm saying - in a very long-winded way!... is that there seems to be more than a touch of snobbery about players from lower leagues coming to QPR, from QPR fans.
And given our past success in doing just that, and the evidence of Wolves and Reading very recently, I find that very, very odd.

As well as the fact that we can now afford to take a punt on young players who are valued at around the £1/£1.5m mark.... more than most clubs can.

I have no problem with buying players such as Ferdinand or Impey from non league football. This is because they might be able to make the step up, but they wouldn't cost more than around 75-100,000 (if that much) and would probably be delighted to sign for about £2k per week (with a view to renegotiating if proving their worth).

Just because the club's owners have money, it doesn't mean QPR can spend £1/1.5m to gamble on League 1 players.

You have referred to Wolves and Reading gambling on lower league players, but they were signed for relatively low fees.

I think Kightly cost around £25K and Doyle around £80K. Stephen Hunt wasn't expensive and Kitson cost around £300K.

I would be delighted if QPR could find such bargains, but don't think some of the players suggested fit that description. I think Simeon Jackson could be good, but not at £1.5M up front.

Well, that's setting the sights a lot lower. Lower than even I am.
Fair enough opinion.

If £1.5m is too much for a player who "could be good", every QPR fan should totally re-think the standard of player we should be looking at.
Or half that for Barnard.

Personally, I don't think £1.5m is too much too expect us to pay for an in-form young striker from that division, who's been recently scouted, and frequently watched by Gorman.

If THEY (gorman and magilton) decide that Jackson is capable of making the step up, and has the potential to be a future top striker at QPR... then I'd say that's a fair price, and is pretty much the going rate for a League One striker. Well, a good one anyway.
Although cr*p ones are usually cheaper!

That doesn't mean to say that we can't also scout the even lower leagues for the sort of price range you're talking about.
